So basically, he seems to be saying that kids need to disconnect from society every once in awhile so that they can experience middle-aged angst.

He's talking about catharsis. He's saying that the constant need to stay connected is creating people who no longer know how to relax or enjoy the quiet moments. He's just saying it in a really roundabout way, as usual.

I'm pretty that because material conditions improved so much and became very stable, that something like emo was made possible. You never saw a kid from a third world country do emo. Too busy trying to survive.
