Is Dark Sun an alternate future Forgotten Realms?

No they are separate but a 1993 issue of Dragon IIRC actually mentioned an Athasian invasion of Faerun (basically grab metal and YOINK).

I seem to recall this being the speculations of the Sage (of the Sage Advice column), regarding what would happen if there was some sort of reliable way for the people of Athas to reach other worlds - namely that there would be a mass exodus. Hence why it's sequestered.

Ravenloft also would not scare the average Athasian. Athas was probably worse than RL.

Kalidnay begs to differ.

The page is down… :( I'd be really interested in your ideas.

All lies this is the true origin of Athas: Long ago, in the era known as Kamen’Bert, there was a world. It was rich, lush and verdant. People openly worshipped gods and magic was abundant and did not consume the world. It was the third age of the Game, a colloquial term for life in what was then known as The Living Realms.’ The Realms were not yet forgotten. Halfway through the 3rd age, a time known as ‘3.5’ life on The Not Yet Forgotten Realms reached it peak. Magic was everywhere and scores of benevolent dark skinned elves with scimitars kept the peace.

Powerful generals had begun to communicate via the ‘interweave’ – a network of nodes powered by the weave, connecting scrying orbs to each other enabling the sharing of knowledge, power and technology. However rather than being an era of peace, as such sorcerers are haughty folk, there was much arguing and occasionally flames were sent through the interweave to burn other interweave users. In what would be their downfall a group of wizards collectively decided to make the most powerful weapon they could manufacture – the peasant bolt thrower.

Due the magical nature of the 3.5 era, a person could freely pass an item to an adjacent person in close to 1/∞ seconds. By gathering a line 20 of peasants, all hired for pittance and placing them in a 100 foot line they could pass a projectile to each other and by the end, having travelled 100 foot in mere moments would deal tremendous damage to whatever hit. Such technology was know as ‘the peasant bolt thrower’.

However there were those who craved even more power. They sought the power of gods - and to gain such power gods must be killed! Together they were known as the ‘Mages of Sern’ and conjured over one million servants, splitting them into two large circles, creating what they called ‘The Large Speardron Collider'

Giving each a spear the circles of peasants accelerated their respective spears to near lightspeed before two of the servants were killed allowing the spears to exit the circles and collide. A blinding flash was the last thing they saw as all the energy of the interweave was unleashed consuming all people and deities of the 3rd era and reducing the word to a barren wasteland we now call Athas.
