I have no idea what Shayuri is considering, but I don't have many classes that I do not already have in a PbP game so other options would be probably looking at a variation.

I might try my Druid caster build (human with a domain instead of an animal companion) or another option would be a Human Ranger.

Would you still run the game with only 3 players, MV?

I might try an Oracle if Perrin goes ranger.

Otherwise, if he's a druid I could go for something more arcane/blasty...or perhaps some kind of ranged specialist...

Hm. An Oracle of Flame is nearly as good as blasting as a sorceror, and can still heal up a storm.

Course, that's true of druids too.

From a setting perspective...

Oracles are, while not common, more common than actual clerics among the faithful of The Ten as most of The Ten outside the Lord and Lady of Shadow do not have organized churches, yet. As such, oracles are the subject of disdain and outright prejudice among many followers of the Healing Light.

Druids are the dominant religious figures of Turen, the forest kingdom, tending to the common folk as well as the land they call home, preserving balance between the needs of humans and the needs of nature. It is rumored that the Queen of Turen is secretly selected by the druids, who also serve as advisors.

Interesting.

Are the Ten the only divine forces that empower oracles, or can they be selected by other sources of power as well?

The Wind, Stone, Flame, and Waves mysteries are found among the Elemental Castes of Emiras. Emiras has an "Arabian Nights" feel culturally, with a heavy focus on the four classic elements, as embodied by genies. The Air Caste is currently dominant after ousting the oppressive Fire Caste in the late 1130s. The Water and Earth Castes are finally gaining strength after having been virtually wiped out during the war between Emiras and Thune about 500 years ago (Thune sent demonic assassins into the elemental planes to kill the genies themselves).

Oracles can also be found among the barbarian tribes of the Drukkar, who control the vast wilderness north of Turen and Azgund and revere dragons, seeking to emulate them. Oracles serve as tribal shamans and are second in power in the tribe to the chief. The most powerful shaman is usually also the spouse of the chief.

Hm...so genies and dragons too, that's useful.

I have a vague notion for a sort of phoenix-inspired character. Flame as both a force of destruction, and a harbinger of renewal...is that the sort of thing that could happen in the setting?

Sounds at least a little similar to your old character in Paths of Legend: The Azgundi Tournaments. ;)

The Shadow Knight, AKA The Lord of Shadow, is a God of Redemption. In mortal life, he was Lord Aluan Velestri of Azgund, the last of a noble Azgundi family who secretly (at the time, it is relatively common knowledge now, at least among the faithful of the Lord and Lady of Shadow and their associates) trained as assassins, carrying on a family legacy of killing people in places of power whose ambitions had strayed too far into the otherworldly and tyrannical. Velestri died at the hands of the Serpent, an immortal force of evil, during the Shadow War and was resurrected. The experience changed him and he became a paladin, offering redemption to those on the evil path, though still retaining his skills as an assassin should they refuse. It is said that The Shadow Knight and his wife, the Silver Shadow, used a magical flying vessel called The Phoenix during the last battles of the Shadow War and use the ship even now, to explore the vast expanse of the planes beyond the mortal realm.

Actual phoenixes are quite rare, existing mostly in legend and fable. The Phoenix is a powerful symbol of, ironically, evil among certain elf clans. Elves hold all life sacred but believe that elven souls return to the source of life upon death, to be reborn. The phoenix, in some elven fables, steals elven souls upon death, taking them for its own selfish desires, causing them to reborn in non-elven bodies. Among the Drukkar, the phoenix is a creature of omen and prophecy, along with a variety of other creatures. A child born under the sign of the phoenix ascending (the Drukkar have a complex system of astrology based on constellations, sun and moon positions, and other phenomena) will bring prosperity to the tribe after a long winter. A child born under the sign of the phoenix descending signifies a time of suffering and death for their tribe but will then rebuild the tribe to be greater than it was before.

Aw, no. Shayuri was a human with a bit of dragon bloodline.

This character was a normal human. The magic came from an event in which a phoenix elected to save her life by combusting while holding her. They both burned to ashes, but only she emerged...whole again. From that point forward she has a mark on her back; the stylized image of firey wings. A 'phoenix crest.'

Haven't really done detail work on the idea yet. I still can't tell if the concept will work with your setting.

The impression I'm getting is that it won't though. Which is fine. I only have about 7,000 more ideas. :)
