Quarantine, schmarantine: we're all gonna die!

News from the front lines of the Ebola outbreak is not good. Not only is this the biggest outbreak ever, it seems that some people in charge of controlling it still don't quite "get it." Here's the quote that drove it home for me:

Sawyer was immediately put into quarantine upon arrival in Lagos — a city of 21 million people — and Nigerian authorities say his fellow travelers were advised of what Ebola symptoms to watch out for and then were allowed to leave. The incubation period can be as long as 21 days, complicating the effort to trace who may be infected because they may not fall ill for several weeks.

IOW, "Sorry for the inconvenience caused by that guy who died- have a safe journey to wherever you're going, and let us know if you're dying anytime in the next 3 weeks."

We are all gonna die, that is true.

Not sure Nigeria has the means to quarantine people for 21 days. Who does? I mean look at the southern boarder of the US and the problems it has with kids coming in. Still Ebola is totes serious, dude, the international community should be getting its wallet out. Ooooooh yeah, it is happening in Africa. Good luck with that.

It would seem like each country should have a Quarantine protocol that has a facility for housing a 100 victims, or a mobile tent/command unit capable of doing the same. (instead of 100, insert number that covers a planeload of people and most of the people who initially had contact with them when they arrived)

Basically, the entire load of people should get quarantined on arrival. If that means holding them, and shipping the mobile unit to their location, so be it.

That should in turn, be a UN function, that way it is handled consistently across the board for all countries.

Granted, with such a system in place, some guard or flight attendant will be reluctant to call it in, because it'll mean they have to be quarantined as well.
