Doom of the Savage Kings

Boral steps forward and asks, "Well, that is interesting... it has a lair, then. Do you know how we might find it? Perhaps in the morning we can investigate as it sounds as if there is dark magic involved, and any magic can be undone if we could discover the means."

Tender says, "I'm glad to hear there are fighting men here abouts ready to do the bloody deed when needed. Why is that beast so connected to the altar you place your sacrifices?"

Kurl nods fingering his holy symbol. "Besides, my patron would like for me to see these fens. He is fond of such places."

Hank and Homer's eyes widen in concern at the revealing of information. Franko's head tilts to the side in curiosity, "so it comes and gets killed only to puff away in dark smoke. Which way is this fen, sir? We took notice of the direction it drifted."

Nothan tilts his head to one side then nods. "Well, that's the tale anyway. I couldn't say for certain where such a lair might be." He nods approvingly at Boral's suggestion to investigate further. "You investigate and the people of Hirot would be in your debt. We've found out little enough about the demon but if any know any tales about it it would be Llore. He's usually at the Wolf Spear and I hear you're headed that way anyway."

One of the guards responds to Tender. "And we're glad there's men who still will stand against Chaos instead of bowing their back when it comes 'round." It's obvious that these men, at least, do not favor the Jarl's method of dealing with the Hound.

Nothan nods his support of the statement and continues to answer Tender's question. "We don't know that it has any connection to the altar at all. But it does take the sacrifices and leave the town alone for a few days after." He turns to Kurl. "Maybe so, but I wouldn't venture to the Fens until you've done everything you can to stand strong against the demon."

He looks to Franko and frowns. "I wouldn't say it comes to get killed. It can't be killed. Not by any way we know. And when it is driven off it always comes back with a vengeance. Until there is a way to kill it for good we'd rather not stir its ire."

Hank thinks for a few minutes and asks, "What types of weapons were used? Cold Iron, silver, blessed . . .?"

Homer leas close to Nothan, whispering,"Sir, Take Franko with a grain of salt. I think he may be a little touched"

Franko does nothing to convey Homer's allegations as false. In fact, the slightly far away look in his eyes might confirm it.

"Our weapons are of good, forged steel, as they should be." Nothan frowns. "Iron would be good for pry bars and the like and silver wouldn't hold an edge for long. I doubt the blades were blessed though you might speak to Father Beacom at the Chapel of Justicia to be sure." He glances at Homer but makes no comment, preferring instead to judge a man himself on his words and actions rather than on another man's words.

Nothan looks at the group, then to Morgan. "Well past time for decent folk to be off the streets. Need you an escort, Morgan?"

"I've more than enough as it is, I think," she says. "I'll be taking them to the inn to speak with my father and for a meal and a room."

Nothan nods. "Very well, then. If you wish to discuss the Hound further find me when you can."

Morgan leads the weary group through the streets of Hirot. They quickly come to the village square. It is largely deserted save for a few scruffy mongrels that pick their way through the abandoned stalls. A locked strongbox rests atop a short wooden post in the center of the square. A tattered banner displaying a sable wolf rampant hangs forlornly above the strongbox. Morgan spits at the ground as she passes it.

Homer leans closer to Morgan and quietly asks, "What is that strong box for? Some sort of tax? or the lottery for the alter?"

"It's the lottery box. Every three days names go in the slot in the box and the lucky name drawn gets a meeting with the Hound at the altar." She kicks the post holding the box but it is ineffectual in damaging it.

"We will defeat this hound together, and then there will be a ceremonial burning of the lottery box. I think you should be the one to ignite it, Morgon." says Franko. There is no jesting in his tone - just great sadness.
