During his watch, Kamael tried to talk to Shushaar, who remained typically reticent. Even so, Kamael recognised the creature had an unusual perception of the world and tried to think on and understand the responses he received.

In the morning, he gathered up the caltrops again, before gathering everyone inside the teleport circle and attempting to activate it..

OOC:
Dammit, can I try and use inspiration to succeed?

Kamael spend several minutes feeling with his mystic senses, trying to understand how the pieces of what he felt fit together. He knew in theory what the end result was, and he knew that all of the hard work had already been permanently fixed in the right configuration, but it was no use, he didn't have any direct experience yet himself of how the weave produced a teleport effect.

Finally, he took a deep breath and stepped back. You're going about this the wrong way, he thought, you're over thinking this. Don't try and figure anything out, that's how wizards do it! Let your intuition guide you, feel the energy gathering within you, that's it, just a little bit at first.

Now, which bit feels responsive..there? No, here, where there remains a trace of flux! Yes, something is happening! It needs more, go with it! Let go of restraint, let go of self, embrace the weave. Let it run wild, unfettered, as it absorbs the focus of your will, drawing more and more mana and expanding to fill the area and merging with all therein!

Finally, in an instant, everything moves along the mystical pathway, an uncontrolled surge of power and will to an unknown destination..

Kago examined the shield carefully, and discovered that it had magic woven into it. It was smaller than a normal shield and therefore wouldn't protect as large an area, but it seemed impervious to the elements. He tested it by dipping it in the stream--trying to retrieve water--and discovered that it repelled water; it was bone dry when it came out of the stream. And the fire from Kamael's bonfire seemed to not affect it at all, either. Although it was metal, the shield didn't become warm to the touch when held next to the flames. The bit of wood Kago broke off the door to the eastern storage room was interesting, too. It was buoyant on water, but burned easily. Too easily, perhaps. It tasted like the mushroom broth fed to him by his drow captors back at the outpost.

OOC: Impervious Shield: +2 to AC (same as a regular shield), no attunement required, common. The gray wood has vulnerability to fire but floats on water. It's lighter than regular wood, and is inedible.

Try as he might, Kamael could not get the teleportation circle to function. It sparked a bit from the point on the compass rose where Raza stood, then sputtered and died out. The sense of disappointment from Jimjar and Stool was palpable. Shuushar opined, "Perhaps it is broken and in need of repair?"

OOC: Inspiration is not going to do much good here, I'm afraid.

OOC: I'll take a Survival check from the party navigator (Kago), along with a description of which passageway the group intends to use to exit the cavern.

Raza had learned early that life was full of disappointment so she wasn't terribly surprised when the teleportation circle didn't work. However, she wasn't quite ready to give up on the idea. She motioned for Shuushar to join her at her point of the compass rose.

"Youth; always so ready to throw in the towel when adversity rears its head. No perseverance. Help me examine this, will you?" She kneels to study the circle, looking for anything that makes it different from any other point. When Shuushar joins her she looks the kuo-toa in the eye. "You knew this was here, did you not? I sensed you were holding something back when we asked about the closet. What do you know of this device?"

"Many exits out of here. Many entrances. These doors will float, and could make a good raft on the stream. But this circle..." He too looks at Shuushar sternly, and then speaks to Raza. "We have no time for lies, Razzza. If the fishman is not truthful, we will have more meat for your stew."
