Yeah I have a Goliath Fighter with this background that mined with dwarves for his simple cut of pay.
His background was a bit of a blend with the Goliath Fighter pregen from the same season, his tribe being killed by giants and him out on his own.
I feel the Earthspur Miner really provides quite a few good things; languages native to the underground, appropriate skill picks as well as gear and a feature that works good for the party and the concept.
It also fills a good niche for a background; a miner.
My character used a warpick for a weapon but also had an axe and a hammer, all "tools" that dubbed as a weapon in a pinch. During Out of the Abyss I played the same character and surprise surprise that module had parts where knowing how to mine became relevant.
