D&D 5E Cantrip house rule

For those DMs that think cantrip damage is overpowered, consider this house rule:

Damage inflicted by a cantrip is equal to the caster's proficiency die.

Too restrictive? Allow the caster to expend a spell slot to empower him- or herself and thus use the current RAW. This empowerment lasts for the duration of the scene/combat encounter.

A cantrip is doing ~25% of a martial character's DPR. An Evocation Wizard or a Dragon Sorcerer does ~35%. Eldritch Blast does much more (~84%), but that is very unique and purposeful for that class.

Numbers based on DPR of Classes

If people think that's too overpowered then they can make changes, but they should be aware of the current state before doing so.

The only thing that I can see about Cantrips being "overpowered" is scaling with character level vs. class level. However, damage-wise they are already either on par with or less potent than standard attacks. The only standout for Cantrips is the secondary effects some have, but even then its nothing that puts them into the "overpowered" category.
