Kobold Press' MIDGARD Campaign Setting For 5E & Pathfinder

Over on Kickstarter, Kobold Press has launched an updated version of their Midgard campaign setting for D&D 5th Edition and the Pathfinder RPG. It's already funded, and consists of a 300+ page campaign setting book, plus separate supplemental books for each game system, and a book of short 5E adventures. For those not already familiar with Midgard, it has been around for a few years in various incarnations, and describes itself as "a world of dark roads and deep magic, firmly rooted in European myths and legends". You'll find the Kickstarter here.

There are a few options for backers. Most people seem to be going for the 5E Basic Books Combo for $80 so far, which gets you the campaign setting hardcover, the Heroes Handbook hardcover, and the PDF versions of each. There's a lot more info about Midgard over here on Kobold Press' website.

Hehe, you are right on that. I meant less about trademark, but that Midgard (at least over here) is a pretty well-known RPG system (after all, it is one of the first RPG systems ;-) ).

Despite that thinking about doing a pledge for this "second" Midgard for 5e, sounds pretty interesting!

Most of us Anglophones have probably never heard of it?

Why? Just because something is digital doesn't mean it has no cost to produce. Someone still needs to write the words, edit the words, layout the pages, draw the art in the product, etc.
Sort of defeats the purpose of stretch goals. If I have to pay extra for it, what exactly is the benefit of achieving the stretch goal?

Looks like we are in. It will be my 2nd kickstarter ever.

WotC won't make one so look for a good alternative.

WotC is promoting this one (as with previous Kobold 5E kickstarters), through podcasts and social media: they might not feel like producing every product that could be made, but they are quite supportive of their friends using the OGL...

Wizards of the Coast in general and the D&D dev team in particular should love high quality settings coming from third party publishers for D&D. It keeps people in the D&D brand of games instead of splintering them off into other game systems and keeps the sales on the core rulebooks where they need to be to support the team and justify what they're doing year to year. And if a setting ever comes out that sets the world on fire and spins off into other media then they would also have something to point to and tell their executives "guys - we could be doing stuff like this. Put some money out there in our budget for us start creating some new settings again."

As someone who owns the previous Midgard book, but plays 5E, what makes it worth backing this Kickstarter? I'm on the fence at the moment.

Advances the timeline about 10 years, new gods unleashed, new conquests between kingdoms, death and rise of rulers and major NPCs. Also, a new and awesome set of regional maps (by Anna Meyer, the Southlands cartographer) and Alyssa Faden (well-known city mapper).
