D&D 5E [IC] THE CURSE OF AMBERSTAR

Neurotic

I plan on living forever. Or die trying.
Thulwar met undead occasionally on his forays into the Underdark. But those were mostly corporeal simple types with occasional shadow to spice things up. These poor wretches tugged at his creative, healing soul only to change to undead horrors in front of him. It shook him to the core and his hands shake as he lobs the fire onto foremost of the ghosts.

A shimmering blue blade sluices out of Icosa's right forearm. On his left a circular metal plate unfolds and snaps into position like a shield, albeit with a complex-looking bit of gadgetry in the center that pulses with dim light.

As he prepares for confrontation, Icosa does not find any established tactical data about such entities as these. It is unfortunate, but he will have to build that database as he fights, putting him at a brief disadvantage as he does! (ie - he's frightened :))

Wisdom save: [roll0]

The spirits rise up before Lyllie. Ghosts, she thinks to herself. They can be reasoned with... sometimes. She tries to speak, but something has stolen her voice. She tries again to push the sound out, but there is nothing. Suddenly her attempts at speech turn into a desperate scream, one that fills the chamber with an echoing horror that reverberates back into Lyllie's mind, triggering memories of her brethren being torn apart and turned into bits of floating ash as the Amberstar ripped through her homeland. Floating away into bits of nothing, leaving Lyllie a frightened child, alone the the scorched desert that was seconds before her lush homeland of Glitterdale. Everything was gone. Everyone. She fell to the baked earth and cried, trembling. But it was cold, the earth. Cold and damp and...

"No," she cried in a whisper. "Stay away, please!" she scurried away from the apparition and curled her knees to her chest.

Initiative & Wisdom save: 1D20+2 = [20]+2 = 22
1D20+5 = [2]+5 = 7

Falling back on years of fighting experience, Aanzu is not fooled by the pathetic pleas of mercy by the creatures surrounding them.

Surrounding them. They are not helpless; they are advancing! This is a coordinated attack, under the guise of seeking mercy. Aanzu gets angry for a second before the emotion is pushed to the background as he enters his battle trance. Everything fades away except himself and his opponents. Where before he may have felt a sliver of fear, the dragonborn prince now feels nothing but the familiar focus of battle, to kill or be killed.

Roaring defiantly, Aanzu rushes forward to the nearest foe, his mighty sword slashing.

OOC: Enter Rage.
WIS save: [roll0] (not frightened)
Attack rolls in the next post.

[INITIATIVE ORDER:

LYLLIE 22
EMBLA 22
AANZU 19
ICOSA 17
GOBLIN 16
YTTRIAN 15
MINERS 13
THULWAR 12
GHOSTS 8
HARFIK 5]

[I have added the wisdom bonuses on the save throws for those that haven't done so!]

As the heroes are surrounded by the flowing entities, fear closes its clutches over them! Their bodies shiver at the thought of approaching the creatures! Embla reaches for the sword she collected on the other room and throws it towards the enemy, missing it by a long shot! "Stay away!" - she cries, bending her child and covering her, hoping to protect the baby from harm.

[The frightened characters can still work attacks from afar as they wish!]

Where Embla missed, Aanzu did not. Fast blows cross the ethereal being, turning the image into mists where blood should be. Its agonizing cries are terrible to hear, but they sound like triumph to the dragon! The ghost curls back, terrified, barely able to maintain a semblance of humanity as its shape begins to dissipate! Furious, it looks around, its eyes laying upon terrified Embla once more....

Thulwar's first attack wasn't so lucky. His nervous hand breaks under sweat and he misses! Tnik doesn't do much better as he claws up the enemy nearby his master, unsuccessfully. Apparently, the machine can't ascertain the entity's exact position...

[Ok, in order, Lyllie, Icosa and Thulwar. I'll bring NPC actions right now, but you may use initiative to stop them, if you did beat them to begin with!]

Released, the goblin doesn't think twice: he throws himself into the mists, leaving the ghosts behind as he tries to vanish from everyone's sight. The miners are terrified, stepping back as they try to escape the spirits' wrath. One of the humans is so afraid he releases his tool, his hands weakened by the sheer terror... His eyes are stale as his hair begins to grow white and his skin, paler! He's aging decades in seconds!

Unfortunately, he isn't the only one.... Yttrian opens fire, shooting blindly as his own face seems to age at an alarming pace! He screams a hollow scream, following Lyllie's own desperation. He kneels, seeking protection at all costs!

The situation takes a turn for the worse as arrows begin to fly from the heart of the mists, whistling as they pass through the area! Clearly, they target the heroes, as the ghosts ignore them completely! Most of them are lost around, but one lands at Aanzu's shoulder, lodging itself between two scales, barely scratching the blue warrior! [Aanzu takes 5 points of damage]

The ghosts' march becomes even darker as their eyes begin to glow strangely. They aim the frightened heroes - Lyllie, Embla, Thulwar, Harfik -as if hungering for something... Soon enough, their intentions become clear: they want to possess the heroes!

[When each of the targeted plays their turn, roll charisma save against DC 13. Failure means possession! Also, at the end of this turn you can roll once more for wisdom save - DC 13. Success allow to break the frightened status! But remember that failure by more than 5 takes a few years of your lives...]

[Lastly, nice descriptions! Extra 200 XP for everyone! Loved the ways you portrayed the reactions of your characters, very appropriate to each of them!]

Much like an angry child throwing a toy, Lyllie uncurls herself long enough to lob a half-hearted fire bolt at one of the ghosts. She misses terribly, and screams again as the visions of horror cloud her mind. Suddenly, her scream stops mid-breath, and her large brown eyes begin to blink away the confusion.

OOC: Holy RNGezus, CC hates my today. Three rolls, all of them a fail!

Wis and Cha saves: 1D20+5 = [2]+5 = 7; 1D20 = [9] = 9

Fire Bolt vs. AC: 1D20+8 = [1]+8 = 9; 2D10+1 = [4, 10]+1 = 15

So now Lyllie has failed the Wisdom save by more than 5 twice, she crit missed, AND is possessed!

Aanzu barely notices the arrow now protruding from his shoulder, so focused is he on destroying the incorporeal undead before him. Clearly he managed to injure the spectre, but it is not completely defeated yet!

Repeating his savage attacks, the dragonborn wields his magical greatsword expertly, slashing through the ghost's insubstantial form but managing to hit the creature in spite of its near-absence. Then, Aanzu reverses the grip on his sword and with a masterfully executed backhand motion, cuts the undead in twain, ending its existence in this world.

Only then does the dragonborn look around to see if any other threats have emerged.

OOC: Attacking the same ghost.

Attack 1: [roll0]
Advantage (reckless attack): [roll1]
Damage: [roll2]

Attack 2 (extra attack): [roll3]
Advantage: [roll4]
Damage: [roll5]
