On today's D&D News, they showed a picture that Idle Champions of the Forgotten Realms posted teasing new content. Gregg Tito also teased, "Is this a preview of a new storyline? Or something else entirely? Who knows?"

Maybe we're getting something winter-themed first?
From FR Wiki:

"Midwinter (also known as Deadwinter Day) was a festival to mark the midpoint of winter in the Calendar of Harptos. It occured on a special day between Hammer 30 and Alturiak 1. Amongst nobles and monarchs it was known as Midwinter and was traditionally used to make or renew alliances, although the common people called it Deadwinter Day, a reference to the cold and hard times that remained before the spring.

"On Midwinter Day the Red Fellowship of the Deity known as the Red Knight observes the Retreat. This solemn ceremony consists of an assembly wherein the clergy discuss the previous year's campaigns. Strategies are discussed, battles analyzed, and the accumulated lore integrated into the church's teachings.

The holiest day of the year for the Church of Shevarashis Midwinter Night, during which the Dark Court Slaughter is remembered. Inductions into the ranks of the clergy occur at this time. Each new cleric screams vows of vengeance into the night air and swears neither to laugh nor smile until the Spider Queen and her followers are no more."

Bunch of other FR deity stuff, but this is particularly interesting:

"In 1372 DR, Bane the Black Hand regained his divinity after being reborn out of Iyachtu Xvim like a moth from a cocoon on Midwinter Night. He took back the portfolio of fear and was elevated to a greater deity."

Not sure what the MacGuffin pictured night be...?

After reading through Modron March and Dead Gods, my first answer would be the Amulet that Orcus was looking for. But after all of that information, I'm not sure anymore.

Well, a demon prince plotting to achieve godhood seems like decent AP fare, and appropos for a liminal day of spooky winter divine magic and change.

One of their hints about Lantan mention that they came back "with a weapon" in the Sundering: maybe this amulet...?

Do we know what happened to Lantan from the Spellplague to the Sundering?

I crit!
they didn't sink, which was reported

They 'went' somewhere and came back. They chose to go and return.

Where would they choose to go? Why would they come back ever?

Not officially in detail, but one of the main designers stated, seemingly quite randomly, in one of those Beyond videos, that Lantan came back from somewhere else in the multiverse "with a weapon." Since Lantan seems to be pretty heavily implied to be something they are visiting soon, and it went Planar before coming back to the FR, this mysterious weapon seems likely to be a guiding MacGuffin.

They've been bringing it up consistently for years while remaining could on the details: one assumes details would be spoilers for...something.

So this begs the questions: Where did they go? And what is this weapon?

If it's this amulet, it's either the one Orcus was looking for, which I cannot find what it might be called, or it's something new entirely. There aren't many (see also, any) artifact amulets. If it's something else, then what could it be? That would depend on where they went. If they went to an outer plane, then it could be anything really: an infernal siege engine, a demon ship from the Abyss, or a Marut. They more than likely went somewhere hospitable, though an upper plane seems unlikely, especially with a lack of "weapons" of note that could be brag-worthy. The Latanese tend to be Gondsmen, and he resides on the Outlands, what if they went there and crafted something really freaking nifty?

Or, something more crazy: They ended up in another campaign world. What if they ended up in Eberron and brought back one of their niceties? If it's a "weapon," I'm inclined to believe it's something really special, maybe a warforged juggernaut? My first thought would be a creation forge, but not necessarily a weapon....but, what if it's something big, really big...maybe the theoretical super weapon that may have cause the Mourning?

My thought process really likes that idea.

Tales and Chronicles

Jewel of the North, formerly know as vincegetorix
With a winter theme and the latest playtests, I think there could some kind of link with the Raven Queen who keeps poping up in the lore segments. She's a godess of winter (maybe a Archfey now, Mearls is unclear on this subject), there seem to be some a connection with an artifact amulet of hers but I cant find the name. She's a opponent to Orcus and she now creates Shadow Weapons artifacts from the stuff of the Shadowfell, which could be linked to the ''new dangerous weapon from Latan''.

In 4e ''Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond'', there's a palace devoted to the RQ and her shadar-kai servants, with a portal leading to the Feywild called...Midwinter Hall.

And now, with XGtE, we have a death cleric and the hexblade that could be related to such themes.
