World of Darkness/V:tR (NOT a recruitment thread)

So I managed to get hold of some WoD/VtR books and it all seems pretty interesting. I've played VtR once here a few years ago and liked it quite a bit but, sadly, the game fizzled after a short amount of time. I don't think I've seen any other VtR games recruiting since then, honestly.

So, I was curious: Does anyone around here actually play this system regularly? I'd love to dig a little deeper into it as a player, and maybe eventually try my hand at storytelling sometime after. Alas, the student needs a teacher.

I have run it before, but only face-to-face. PbP seems like an idea way to run a more roleplay intensive game. I wouldn't mind playing in such a game, but I don't have time to run one.

I read through the rule for requiem and found it an oversimplified version. I much prefer VtM to VtR.

Well, in my case, simple is better, so I'm thankful I picked up the right version! :p I was always intrigued by VtM, but never bothered to pick up the books at the time. I'm sure that, if I did, I'd probably agree with you.

I've played White Wolf, new and old, in various incarnations. Vampire's not my favorite, but it can be done well and be fun. I do prefer Requiem to Masquerade. I feel like Masquerade was a bit "too defined" if that makes sense...White Wolf had this whole backstory worked out, and so a lot of the -mystery- of vampirism (and various other supernaturals) was all worked out and just a supplement away. Requiem leaves things a bit more up in the air...for the game master to determine, or not to be determined at all.

I really love Whitewolf games, especially VtM. I do not like VtR however. It just lacks what I think gave the original its flair. I understand the pressing economic need for new editions from time to time, but I'm happy with my old game.

I have run and played in WW games on numerous occasions, but I have to say, WW sort of necessitates live play. I don't know how well it would work as PBP, if that is what you are asking about. I have looked online for people who do play it via chat or PBP and have never found anything worth mentioning. All WW systems are fairly simple compared to a lot of RPGs on the market, and each group tends to develop its own dynamic.

That said, I would be more than happy to offer some nuggets of wisdom based on my experiences with WW games, both running and playing. A lot of the experience comes from having a passion for the milieu. If you like dark games with tragic heroes or anti-heroes, WW offers you a smorgasbord of untapped entertainment. I can only tell you about OWoD though. I have virtually no experience with or desire to play NWoD.

I don't know what it is I want to know, really. Mostly I just want to dive in as a player and learn the system better.

I respectfully disagree that PbP is a poor medium for more "social" games like WoD. I believe that a PbP affords you more time to come up with a creative and meaningful response to some situation or conversation than you might have in a FtF game. In a "social" game, what your character says (and sometimes does) has a great impact upon the course of events, in that games like WoD are far less "railroad"-y than more combat-oriented games. That's my experience, anyway.

I'd like to see some sort of WoD/nWoD game, but unfortunately, I don't have the time to run it myself right now.

I would LOVE to play in a Dark Ages WoD game. That would rock the house.

I used to play VtM and then bought VtR. I wound up converting some of the VtM crunch into VtR and then using the Camarilla as my backgrounds for the game.

They fixed a few of the VtM rules in VtR that I felt uncomfortable with. But I still liked the Sabbat/Camarilla backgrounds for the game.

I did not like some of the new vampire bloodlines in VtR, so they wound up disappearing and bringing back some of the original bloodlines.
