Even Newer Tavern Thread: The Hanged Man

The door opens and a man enters, closing the door behind him and his eyes scan the room.

"I am Corvus Raine. I am here to find some allies." he says succinctly.

Corvus was tall, taller than an average man, and he was a rather inconspicuous figure. He is quite wiry, slender to the point of gaunt. Corvus' face was one of edges and angles, striking without being handsome, and the gaze of his green eyes piercing. Hair once brown had grayed; it hung just past his neck, giving him a vaguely feral demeanor. The middle-aged man stepped into the tavern and approached the bar, taking a large mug of what passed for ale, and turned back to the large number of patrons, exotic all of them, and took measure of each of them.

Livia turns around as Corvus enters, distracted from her observation of the elf Kaz (it isn't clear what she finds so interesting).

"Hah!" she says loudly, looking Corvus up and down with an oddly hostile and challenging gaze, although Corvus has certainly done nothing to offend. "I was beginning to think I'd never see another human in here!"

[sblock=description of Livia]Livia is a short, dark-haired, broad-shouldered, chunky human woman in her early twenties. She has a harsh and unsettling face--her hazel eyes are specked with red, her teeth seem too large for her mouth. Her expression seems hardened into perpetual anger. She wears an asymmetrical mask of eagle feathers fashioned so that the plumes splay out from the left side of her face. (The mask does not conceal her features.)[/sblock]

"Ah yes." Syas Bell. She closes her book and sticks it under one arm before pulling herself to his feet. She forces a hunched posture and begins pacing before the group.

"Mr. Simpleton, the one piece missing from your story, that I am most interested in is what Mr Tine actually said. You say he disapeared from his morning delivery. . . or actually you didn't say that. What you said is that once in the morning he rides the donkey that pulls the wagon that brings the laborers buckets originally to the clay pitts. He then waits till the buckets are full and delivers them. He then returns twice, the second time taking not only the buckets but the workers back I presume. I presume that he disappeared after he picked up his first load, and didn't return till the end of the day. I am correct sir? And what of his buckets sir? When he returned where his buckets empty or still filled with clay? And what did he say sir? Did he realize he had been gone for so long, or did he think he was returning from his first deliveries? Or did he merely wake up somewhere after a moment of blackness?"

Bell pauses letting Mr Simpleton catch up before answering the questions. You would think she would not move forward after so many but a moment later she turns quickly on him and blurts out one more. "And how does one donkey pull a wagon full of workers and clay?!"

Simpletown appears confused, but tries to focus intently on the girl's questions.
"Well, lemme answer in order:
No no, after he returned with the workers from the pits, the guys pack the clay, and he goes about the town to deliver the clay to the potteries of the city. Did I forgot to tell that part? My... years don't come alone me think. So he returned with the cart full of buckets and workers, and he went missing when he went to deliver the packed clay to the potteries in the city."
he explains. He then faces the question of what Gimo said. He scratches his head, as remembering.
"Well, he did said he felt strange; tired think his exact words were... As he told us, he went to the second pottery in his schedule. Mr Raspyhand Pottery in the cross of Heligan and Charleston. He said Mr Raspyhand told him to leave he packeges next door, were he had the storage house. Gimo said he entered the place and left the clay. Then he says he felt something itching on the back of his head. He told he walked out, and that the cart was gone and that apparently the sun had moved across the sky more quickly than he thought. He thought someone had stole the donkey and the cart and returned to the establishment on foot. We found the cart and took it back to the shop, since Gimo didn't return I sent one of my boys to follow the schedule and he found the cart parked in front of Mr. Raspyhand store."

"And that's a big donkey lass, you should see 'im. A wizard friend o' mine casted some strange spell and since then the good ol' Ferdinand could pull a house out of the ground!"
says the clay pits owner proudly.

A woman in a uniform that suggests some type of military official enters the tavern and looks around in a quick, business-like manner.

"Good, I told the Mayor there would be a bunch of you here and I was right. I'll cut straight to the chase; I need a handful of escorts for a mission. It's not the heroic stuff you probably all came here looking to do, but it's something to do and there'll be some coin in it.

"All we need are some tough-looking customers to escort some craftsmen to a tower the Mayor decided to patch up. The tower is a couple days travel away, so you'll need to be prepared for sleeping outside, weather, whatever. A militia unit already headed out there a couple weeks ago and secured it, so we just need you to give any stray beasties or bandits a second thought about going for the mason and her people.

"Do I have any takers?"

"Yes, young one, it is apparent that our kind isn't as common as the bard's tales would have you believe. That's certainly a fancy looking mask you have there, don't they get in your way?" Corvus asks, his voice even, not taking any offense to the hostile female.

At the sight of the military official enters, Corvus moves to stand at attention, "Corvus Raine reporting for duty! If it is someone to lead a squad into the wilderness, know that I have had experience in the Jade Empire under the Iron Shogun, leading his men into battle against the vile Oni and would be honored to conduct the same here in Daunton. I am not here to be a hero, ma'am, seems like we speak the same language" the middle-aged man says, his voice strong.

and have the same voice, both sandybrown ... :)

level 1 human warlord, can cover healing, action granting, the usual leader-y stuff, he can also do a fair job at standing on the front line, having scale armor and a heavy shield. Should be nearly as durable as a fighter, but a few less surges (10 right now). [/sblock]

Kaz walks up to the woman and bows. Pardon me. This one's name is Himura Kazuhira. This one is from the Kingdom of Jade across the sea. As an avenger this one serves the lady Mireva to bring order and justice to the lands that this one wanders. This one would be most pleased to protect your escort. He looks around, however, this one is not in need of your currency at the moment, perhaps others here are in more need?

[sblock=ooc]
Himura Kazuhira Level 1 avenger (unapproved). I would be glad to join, however since I already have a character with an adventure, I will gladly let others who are not on an adventure have a spot instead. :)[/sblock]

Talking with Mr. Simpleton

Bell's face blanches a bit as Mr. Simpleton explains the situation. Stops pacing and listens intently shaking her head. End of the day. itch at the back of the head, horrible murders then back where he started. Abberations from the under evil. Oh dear oh dear. Maybe something else? Hopefully? Can't be lycanthropy because people recognized him. Could be a spirit. That would explain the rage and seemingly random violence. Yet he ended up in the same spot. That implies something more clever. Oh dear oh dear. Bell bites her bottom lip while she thinks and looks at Mrs. Gimo with a great deal of sadness. Her pity is soon overwhelmed by fear and anxiety.

"Iapologizeformyinacuracies! We should go!" She looks to her new allies quickly, shoves her journal in her bag and then makes for the door.

"Do I have any takers?"

The muscle-bound, spear-toting half-orc, having just finished his oysters, drains the last drop of his ale and stands up. Crossing the room, he gives the uniformed woman a curt nod saying, "G'day mate. Not ta big note meself or nothing, but I reckon I fit your bill for tough-looking. Be happy ta keep the bunyips offa your craftsmen for a bit o' coin."

[sblock=ooc]Yimayngurr - Half-orc Hunter Ranger 2, most definitely interested! He's my first and only character thus far.[/sblock]

Livia looks over at the recruiter. "I'm in if you can use me," she says. Narrowing her eyes, she adds, "And if it's just an escort mission, as you represent it."

[sblock=ooc to IronSky]Livia is a 3rd level human seeker, not yet approved.[/sblock]

"Tough?!" The half-orc bellows with sudden laughter. "You'll find no tougher then me!" Gurk looks at the other daring them to contradict his statement of bravado. "In fact, I spent years in the arena fighting beasts, and no man would dare to challenge me unless they were as dumb as one. Show me the way and I will go."

Gurk stands up from his seat as he speaks. He carries no weapons, no armor, and little gear, but several scars that run along his chest bear witness to the fact that he has survived combat and is no fool rushing in to meet death.
