Even Newer(er) Tavern Thread: The Hanged Man

[sblock=In which I attempt to frighten players away]Six players is really my limit. While it would be nice to have a few people of proven reliability, I don't want to turn new blood away. (And of course being new doesn't necessarily mean someone is less reliable.)

To those contemplating this adventure: Really, it's long. Think seriously about how interested you'll be in PbP when your exams come around or work gets crazy or you decide to have a baby. It takes more effort to post turns than you might think. I realize waiting sucks, but new adventures do show up every so often.

One other thing: I talked to BenBrown, who's running a 1st level adventure (Get Me to the Church on Time) at the moment. One of the players in that group went missing early on, and he said he'd be willing to add a new one. He favors a character with sneaky-scouty skills, to balance the lumbering lunkheads currently in the group--please note that "lumbering lunkheads" (I play one of them) is my characterization, not Ben's--so if any of the sneaky people around (Tyris? Irregulars?) are interested in getting into something shorter, let one of us know.[/sblock]

Yet another dwarf pushes open the tavern door and walks inside. This one is a young redheaded lady. She has a muscular build, but she wears a modest skirt and cape so that that little skin is exposed. Her chainmail armor, metal visor, heavy shield, and steel weapons give her away as a warrior.

"Castile Angzak arriving!" she announces without needing any prompt from the bouncer or the bartender. But after she introduces herself, she stands around looking rather lost. She wonders, so what's the next step in getting a job?
Castile eventually takes notice of the almost skeletal dwarf-creature and his party. She takes a few steps closer to them, but she remains at a safe distance until she can hear what they're talking about.

OOC: Level 1 dwarf fighter looking for work.

[sblock=In which I am not frightened away]I am neither sneaky, nor interested in baby-having. The prospect of being a Barbarian in a long term adventure with two Leaders that can both grant attacks is intriguing, particularly considering that this is one of my favorite builds of one of my favorite classes. Unlike some of my characters, I have clear ideas of where I want him to go, mechanically and RP-wise, in the long game. As opposed to just having half of Heroic plotted out an maybe a nice looking Paragon Path before figuring I'll play it by ear.[/sblock]

[sblock=OOC]I am thrilled to begin my PbP adventures here, and there is no way that I want to leave after having a brief yet appealing taste of what I have seen. Summer is nearing and that guarantees endless free time on my part, and beyond that, I know that I will be able to commit to the time and effort posting takes. I would be honored to have the privilege of undergoing your lengthy adventure :)[/sblock]

The cadaverous dwarf regards Castile through his eye-holes for several moments.

"Good day," he says. "Are you Magari? From your face, I would guess you to be.... But you dress like a Dauntonian."

"Ladies and gentlemen!"

Standing inside the door of the tavern, arms outstretched as if in acknowledgement of thunderous applause, is a tiefling. His horns sweep back from his head at the same angle as he holds his arms, accentuating his pose. He looks briefly around the tavern at its occupants, then continues without batting an eyelid.

"And others. Ladies, gentlemen and others, it is my great pleasure, nay privilege, to be here on this day to share such a special moment with all of you. For today will long be remembered by those present as the day on which you met the esteemed, the admired, the inimitable... Ludwig van Hendricks!"

With that, the tiefling takes a bow. His cape flutters behind him. He resumes his oration as he walks around the tavern, occasionally directing his words at specific individuals but always attempting to keep the entire room engaged.

"And who is Ludwig van Hendricks, I hear? Oh, what a question! He is everyone! He is no one! He is everything you aspire to be, and some of the things you wish you weren't. He is song, dance, wine and merriment! He is the friend of your friends, and the enemy of your enemies. Ludwig van Hendricks is all of this and more!"

Ludwig's meandering soliloquy leads him to the bar. "A glass of your second finest wine, thank you barkeep," he whispers as he draws a lute from the fold of his cloak. He sits on a stool with his back to the bar, and begins to play.

"Ludwig is a minstrel, a poet, a musician, a philosopher, a lover, a dreamer and all things between," says the tiefling, his speaking voice in perfect harmony with the lilting melody. From behind him his glass of wine lifts, seemingly of its own accord, from the bar top and floats through the air to his lips. He takes a sip while continuing to play, and as the glass floats back to the bar, he adds with a wink, "Occasionally Ludwig is other things too."

Standing up and stowing his lute, Ludwig continues. "So if you're looking to sing, dance, laugh, fight, converse or even just to get mad stinking drunk, you will find no better companion for any activity than Ludwig van Hendricks!" Ludwig walks around the tavern, shaking hands with anyone whose gaze he can hold for even a second. "Thank you! Thank you! You're all such wonderful people! Thank you! I'm so happy to meet you! Thank you!"

[sblock=OOC]Ludwig van Hendricks, level 1 tiefling Psion|Bard, ready for adventure.[/sblock]

[sblock=mewness, you're terrifying]I was concerned with how the irregulars would fit in the competition anyhow. I can hld off and see if BenBrown wants to bring in the irregulars. Like I said before, I've got Felix in an adventure and I'm having a ball there. I can wait on a second if need be.

That said, the idea of playing in an AP was exciting.[/sblock]

"I wouldn't say we're frisky... We just have a fondness for life... that leads to a fondness for curves." The little fay smiles up at Mab and winks.

Ludwig's entrance earns him a round of applaus from the Irregulars. "A bard!" "Hooray!" "We love bards! They make us sound awesome!"

"Ludwig!" The captain calls out. "If you think you can master the third person, come over here and I'll buy you a drink. I'd love to hear what's happening on the rest of the Isles." Several piskies clear off the chair next to Captain Dartmoor.

The Pict has found a stray gold coin under the table and is carrying it back to the Irregulars' table.

"You have a good eye" says Castile, not intending any insult. She walks over to the small group and stands next to Alkas. "My family is Magari, but I've always lived in Daunton. You could say I got the best of both worlds!" She giggles stupidly.

Castile appraises the gaunt dwarf more closely. He's very exotic; definitely not from Daunton. "Are you from the valley then? You're, uh, not what I would have pictured."

I plan on living forever. Or die trying.
"Everyone is trying to get as much attention as possible. Were we like that before we saw horrors of the wolrd?" asks Illarion nobody in particular, but quiet so not to intrude upon those already competing in bardic competition

Johnathan Michael looks at Illarion curiously, "This world isn't so bad. At least no one's purple here..."

OOC: On yesterday's question of enchantment: AV says, on page 198, that a person can subtract the cost of the original item when enchanting it with a higher level enchantment (as long as it's going from "Magic" to something else or just up to a higher level of the same enchantment. The example follows:

"Likewise, a 6th-level ritual caster could spend 1,440 gp to make a
+1 wand (360 gp) into a +2 wand (1,800 gp)"
