If you really want to play D&D and feel excluded because the art isn't to your taste, then you probably have some severe emotional problems. The key to surviving life: getting over things that don't matter. If D&D contained art that was actually offensive (women being raped, caricatures of minorities, etc.), I could see your point. But getting up-in-arms over contemporary D&D art? A waste of energy.

Cool, then you won't mind if there's not a single white man in the books, either, except the occasional chubby exotic dancer in a magical jock strap.

That would actually be pretty funny, though I would consider such gratuitous sexuality (as I mentioned earlier) and prefer not to have such artwork in the game.

After reading the opinions and comments voiced in this thread, I felt it was time I finally stopped lurking, and posted here, in response.

Your comments as to women not mattering to the hobby?

Your qualifications as to women being overly sensitive?

Your statements, as expressed both here and elsewhere on the forums?

They are actively and literally causing women to declare this forum hostile, toxic, and harmful; and to depart.

This essay was distressing.

The fact that it may fall on unhearing or uncaring ears is more so.

Just a small nitpick here: Is being about beauty really the same thing as being about sex? In theory, I think it should be possible to have a painting of a completely nude nymph where the nymph is not attempting to give off the sexual vibe.

Hell, I think it could almost be issued as a challenge: give us a portrayal of an intensely beautiful and yet non-sexual nymph in 5e.

Just to pick on this specific example, but, aren't nymphs kinda in the same category as succubi? Why wouldn't you sexualize a nymph? Or, most of the female beauty fairy creatures.

Eh. Nymphs are kind of the poster children for women who are objectified by other people.

They have a habit of turning into plants, forever, to escape being "pursued" by men. Pan pipes are basically the corpse of a nymph who said "No."

It's not like it would harm you.
No, it wouldn't. The difference is that I'm willing to admit it.

If she's unable to post in an environment where people might disagree with her without suffering emotional distress, then it's better for her not to post here. I'd recommend RPG.net if she wants a feminist "safe zone."

B.T. Think about it this way. For the past few years, one of the most persistent criticisms of 4e was the marketing. During the marketing of 4e, WOTC made a number of questionable statements about earlier editions. And, questionable is putting it about as mildly as I can. Things like the video that talks about all the editions and has the narrator put on a fake French accent were pretty brutal.

Now, there was a huge backlash against the marketing. People were very, very upset. Should they take the same advice that you're giving and just "suck it up"? Should they ignore the fact that they feel that they are being directly insulted? After all, they're not being hurt and there's no major social agenda being forwarded here.

I don't think so. They had a complaint and they have every right to make that complaint and be heard.

So, if it's perfectly acceptable for a group of gamers to be offended by the marketing, why is it not acceptable for another group of gamers to be offended by the marketing?

I think the difference could be summed up as: Succubi exist to tempt mortals. Nymphs tempt men by their very existence. That difference is subtle, but potent.

Think of it from the nymph's point of view: A nymph that minds her own business as a man walks by is under no circumstances shirking her role in life; if she is not interested, she is not interested, and she can lead a life just fine without ever being interested. A succubus that minds her own business as a mortal walks by is under most circumstances shirking her role in life. If she is not interested, mortals are not getting tempted, and that is bad for her side and her own advancement up the ranks.

When I ask for a non-sexualized nymph, I mean a nymph that is carrying along with her life without holding her breath waiting for the next man to come her way. You could think of it this way: How would you depict a nymph interacting with a party of all female adventurers?

Edit: I take the person who decided to quit EN World was Balsamic Dragon?
