PS4 / X Box One; anyone buying?

as I have 2 PS3s on my shelf with bad lasers...so I can't play my blurays

and 2 360s that work just fine...

It's a tough call.

I advise waiting six months. Let the initial build issues settle out, in case there's anything horrific to learn about product quality. Plus, we can expect a few firmware updates...

the wife wants an Xbone, not interested in Sony.

I'd at least like to see what the PS4 non-gaming experience is like (as the PS3 xcross interface is terrible compared to most iterations of the 360's dashboard, let alone featureset like Xbox Live Parties). Sony may have learned to steal some ideas this time around.

So, I'll see. I'm especially sad that there's no BC, but that doesn't seem important to the industry anymore...

Either way, no sense rushing to choose a bandwagon. The early models will be hard to get, and possibly quirky. Instead, wait and go try your friends machines and see for yourself.

But your friend said he was waiting for you to get one so he could see for himself...

In my case, I got a friend who's getting a PS4 because he thinks MS wants to film him in his undies with Kinect2. Given that his 360 is actually named "XYZ's Girlfriend" (because you can name the drives), maybe he's got something to hide...

And I got 2 friends getting the Xbone.

I reckon I'll get first hand review time to see for myself before I blow my wad on the "wrong box"

As there's no BC, barring horrible defects, I don't see either box as likely to be the "wrong box". they'll both play pretty games, watch Netflix, stuff like that.

They both cost money to play online, so once you cross that threshold, the old Sony is free to Netflix advantage is nullified.

If you already have the prior gen, there's at least a synergy bonus for getting to use the same account/subscription for both platforms.

Other than that, I think it's more of a cost factor consideration or just pure love of a given company's product. Sony's a bit cheaper and that's a pretty straightforward reason to go with them.

I'm a PC gamer only. And not much of one at that. I play a little Skyrim and Oblivion and Fallout but mostly for nostalgia.

No, or at least not anytime soon. My 360 will suffice until there's something I just have to have that isn't available any other way. Nothing announced for XBone trips that threshold yet. I have plenty of games that could stand more play and I haven't been playing much. Heck, Forza 5 looks worse than Forza 4, which was worse than Forza 3 (for me -- improved graphics no longer impress me).

Since the Xbox One is not backwards compatible I have no skin in this game. I'll keep my 360 for now, and finish the many games I haven't played to my satisfaction yet. Meanwhile I plan on looking at how each console evolves over the next few months and make a decision once the price breaks hit.

Well, that was fun

One of my big things is home sharing and streaming between devices. You can do that on the PS3, but it's not reliable or intuitive.

I'm not in the market for a new console right now. Ask again in late 2014 or early 2015. And depending on how I choose to upgrade my laptop (or switch over to desktop + tablet), there's a chance I won't be in the market for a console again.

Though it's a pretty small chance...
