Amazon considers raising Prime subscription fee by up to $40

Article.

I haven't bought enough from Amazon, nor have the things I've bought from them been needed in a hurry, for me to pay for Amazon Prime, but I guess for people that are constantly buying from them, it's a pretty good deal at $79. Is it still worth it at $119?

$79 is a pretty good deal to me for the free shipping, with the free books, TV, and movies a bonus.

It's probably an OK deal at $99. At $119, they lose me, unless they can expand their streaming offerings significantly.

I didn't know about the books and TV. That does make $79 sound like a much better deal. At $119? Yeah, I'm going to say they would need to have a rather expansive book & TV library available for me to see it as a good deal. I don't see myself ordering much more from Amazon that the shipping would exceed $119.

Prime is more then free shipping. I get a free book on my kindle each month and I get access to all kinds of free streaming movies and TV shows.

What's the choice on books and TV shows like?

Books, pretty good. TV shows and movies: terrible, and they trickle out a scant few offerings at a time. They get a hodgepodge of random stuff from any era, then maybe one or two good things. The only significantly interesting thing they've put up is Justified Season Four.

Hmmm... so it sounds like it's not worth the total price if it's raised up to $119. Hopefully they on't.

Yeah, that's pretty much my take on it. At $79 I was initially put off but my wife orders enough stuff from there to make it worthwhile. Since we have Netflix, the free movies don't really add anything for us. $119 is just too much for me. Especially since not everything on Amazon qualified for Prime shipping.

I like it for the free 2 day shipping, even though it normally takes 3 days. Order something and you get it pretty quick. I can order a single paperback today and get it for the weekend. Or, "oops, I forgot my daughter is going to a birthday party on Saturday..." She and I can now browse 7 zillion different items for tweens and get something and have it in time for the party.

They're supposedly raising the bar to qualify for the normal "free" 5-7 day shipping. It used to be $25 or more, but supposedly it's going up to $35 to get free regular shipping.

However, I have not used it much for streaming video. You get a lot of obscure and/or older movies, but not too much new stuff, unless it's already been out on DVD for a year or more.
