I did a little research over lunch and then realized that the answer is kind of right in front of me. I import an image of the Excel file into Paint to create the images for combat. I can easily create pretty much any radius circle in Paint with the excel file as a reference. I think the only AoEs that might be hinky after that are cones, but we can cross that bridge when we come to it.
So yeah, for sphere/circle/cylinder spells, just give me a center point (square or intersection) and I'll put a circle around it for the AoE. As I understand it, the DMG basically just says to include a target in the AoE if the circle covers half of their square.
I think that should satisfy everyone.
