D&D 5E Capricious Home Rules and DM Pet Peeves

If I could figure out a good methodology for abstracting wealth I would. I've never seen an abstract wealth management system that can stand up to the complexities of real play without at least as much work as concretely tracking it.
Agreed. I've been eyeing the Fate system for a while. One of my hesitations in using it for anything remotely resembling D&D is the resource mechanic. Even the myriad alternates seem to be hard pressed to actually impoverish PCs, regardless of what they buy.

Yeah, I love Fate, but I think it's best for more a static, episodic style of adventure. At the end of the day, Bruce Wayne is always rich and always Batman.

The way I think about it, the transcript of play of D&D looks like a novel - probably one of those wordy fantasy epic novels that seems to never end, has far too big of a cast of characters, features random senseless deaths of the most beloved and most interesting characters in the story, and seems to always putter to an anti-climax before they are finished.

The transcript of play of FATE tends to look like the script for a TV series - probably one of those that the writer's pitch successfully and the suits want to put in production immediately but no one has an actual working script. Actually, I strongly suspect that some Indy style games actually produce the transcript of play similar to The Office or Parks And Rec, except that the theme is that they are a group of struggling script writers trying to bang out a workable script for a summer blockbuster that is already in production, behind schedule, and with a blown budget when what they really want to be doing is working on their separate pet projects - a script each has been separately working on since they were all pimple faced geeks in high school.

Nerds arguing about what should have happened in a fantasy novel, maybe.
"I call my buddy the giant eagle and fly the ring straight to the volcano and drop it in." "I cast Mordenkainen's Disunction on the Ring until I make the roll." "I toss the Ring in my handy Sphere of Annihilation." "I take the ring and go kick Sauron's ass..." "But, you'll become just as evil as him!" "You should stay outta my way then, shouldn't you?"

A condensed transcript of the process of amateurs writing & rehearsing a script, maybe, a little.

But, yeah, FATE, can give you more of a 'cinematic' feel...
...and it's hardly alone in that.

I remember in The Hobbit that the giant eagles could only fly inside a certain territory. An eagle said he/she could not fly further than a certain point because it's "men's territory". I still didn't read LotR and I refuse to see any movies until I read.

Good luck trying to slog through Tolkein. He's an incredibly boring writer in my opinion, the movies are the only reason why I even know the storyline of lord of the rings and even then, that 3rd movie was getting a bit long.

Well, most roleplayers aren't writers.

Or to be precise, most roleplayers shouldn't be writers even though many think they are.

Let's just say this is a minority opinion in these parts and leave it at that.

Oh yeah, I'm well aware that I'm in the minority. The annoying thing is, it's a genre that I love and I would have expected to love reading them, especially since they are raved about so much. Then I try reading them, get part way in, then quit because I don't find them entertaining.
