D&D 5E Campaign being throw out after a year

Hello all,

This is my first post here on EN, so I would like to say hello! I am having a bit of an issue with my current party I am with. My buddies and I started a campaign about a year ago and have been through about 25 sessions. We started with only two members in the party, me and one friend who has never been introduced to RPG's. We have now added two other members to our party, making for a complete band of adventurers. Unfortunately, it seems that this entire campaign is getting throw out for some unfortunate circumstances that are as follows: One of the new characters came in as a paladin, a holy knight of Taurm. The player that started with me did something outlandish (read: murdered an innocent kid within a town), which gave him two options: be turned on by the paladin and the party as a whole, or repent and give his life to Taurm. Just after this, we were attacked by two mindflayers, one of which managed to actually suck out the brain of the newly holy druid. After hisbrain was sucked out and the mindflayers were defeated, we did a ritual, calling upon his new god to bring him back. Luckily, it worked but the DM brought him back with an intelligence of 1 (instead of a true resurrection). So one character is a braindead druid and the paladin simply doesn't like his character. Instead of doing anything about the situation, the DM simply turned away and started an entirely new campaign back at level 3. I am honestly not too interested in this new campaign and I felt much too connected to our original campaign to simply throw it all away. What should I do? Two players want this new campaign (two powergaming types) and me and the 4th party member want to continue the original campaign. Can anyone give me some advice? I have told the DM that I am not enjoying this and would like to go back, but it is hard to argue against the other two.

Thank you for your help!

Might it be impolite and showing a complete lack of decorum to start by asking if you regenerate after being hit by acid or fire?

If you don’t regenerate, apologies for the burns and scars…and Welcome!

It seems as if the campaign became too chaotic for your DM to want to handle. Can you retcon it back to a certain point before the messiness happened and start over?

That's a tough one. It's really up to what the DM wants to run. If he or she's not feeling the old campaign, there is little hope to bring it back in my view since few DMs will want to run a game they're not into, right? I feel like this situation could have been resolved by just having some players make new characters and continue the old campaign, but it sounds like this ship has sailed.

I think your best course of action at this point, given what I understand of your situation, is to abandon the idea of going back to the old campaign but to talk to the DM about what you liked about the old campaign, specifically, so he or she can include some of those elements in the new campaign.

You have many options here, but one that comes to mind is offer to start a new campaign after you continue the current campaign for a little longer.

You could also offer to start a new campaign under the condition that you will return to this one eventually, and possibly switch back and forth between the two.

Ultimately it will be the DM you need to convince. If they're not into running the game for you, you won't have much luck, no matter how many players want the game to continue. :)

I sure hope so, we just had to run from an ancient green dragon yesterday! Thank you for the welcoming!
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that our DM believes in the use of retcons, or just doesnt know about them. When the player killed the innocent child, the DM realized him backed himself into that situation, but just tried to roll with it. When we resurrected him, he used a "homebrew" resurrection instead of a true resurrection. I don't think he would ever retcon.

That is actually what we did. The DM and I discussed starting a short, silly campaign as we figure out where to go with the real campaign, but now the other two just want to abandon the original. We always said that the original was going to be the main campaign, but that has since changed apparently. They always say to never split the party, but we might even split the real life party.

It feels like there is no going back to the old campaign at this point based on your description of the situation but if half of your group isn't enjoying the new adventure, it sounds like the best solution is to begin another new adventure. This would ideally be if the DM agrees and all sit down to discuss and agree upon expectations for the next campaign. Short of that you will have to decide if you want to continue with a campaign you don't enjoy or find a new group that has one you do.

That is what we just tried to do to fill in as we figured out what was going on in the main campaign. It seems that its more than the dm's decisions, but it seems that it may actually be a toxic party member, unfortunately.

Your campaign ended when a player decided to kill a child. Maybe after the weird resurrection. That seems like a reaction to the first event though.
I'm sure that was a fun moment at the table.

Which sucks BTW. Sometimes campaigns end crappily. Had it happen too.

It was really unfortunate because the player who killed the kid said he wanted to reroll and "wanted to commit suicide" to basically kill off his character. Instead, he just wreaked havoc on the entire storyline during that session, which made it very awkward for all of us trying to react.
