Not really. Social media are a means for the social media provider to get to know you better in order to sell you stuff and/or forward said information to allow others to sell you stuff.

Social media have been invented to make you feel good about revealing private information about yourself to organisations you'd otherwise consider your worst enemy.

Not really. Social media are a means for the social media provider to get to know you better in order to sell you stuff and/or forward said information to allow others to sell you stuff.

Some social media may be used like that, but that's not what social media is. Message boards are an older iteration of social media (before the term gained popularity). Make no mistake, when you post on a messageboard, you are engaging with social media.
