Both. There's some random loot (which I pre-roll) and there's some placed loot if it's a campaign.

It's a simple question, really. Do you roll for a treasure? Or do you hand-pick what you put in your dungeons (etc.)?

A little of both.

Random rolls are good for...

Improvising play.
Ensuring you place creative and diverse treasure.

Placing treasure is good for...

Keeping party balance.
Ensuring the party has enough resources to overcome the challenges they are expected to face.
Inventing new and unique items that are particularly appropriate to the game's lore.

Yes, while prepping I do this and then often modify the results. During play I only do so when I don't have something prepped and want to introduce randomness.

You put this in general RP discussion, did you mean to limit it to D&D-likes?. The game I run has no random treasure tables, making it not even an option.

I know. I wasn't sure if D&D was the only game that had random treasure tables in it. I was certain others had that as well.

I was prompted with this poll by looking at all the tables in the DMG, and I recall (MANY moons) ago, our GM rolling for stuff, and we'd get all excited to see what he came up with. Sometimes, he'd roll really high, and we'd get something really odd, but often we'd roll some weapon or something that no one could use, so that wasn't as fun.

I find the idea of rolling interesting, but very problematic. And 5th edition doesn't have a ton of low level items. I find myself wanting a larger variety of stuff. And 5th edition's reduction of magic item usage overall means I'm certain to create a killer party if I start handing out craploads of items. So, It seems I have to be more careful with what I put in a treasure pile now more than ever.
