How well does the War cleric improve with better gear like magic weapons and belts of strength compared to caster clerics?

Belts of strength and gauntlets make it sing.

It just needs high stats to function well IMHO. At least if you want to be good at spells and fight ok.

I'd be interested in seeing the math of a tier 4 war cleric with a +2-3 weapon and belt of storm giant strength compared to light cleric who plays as a caster.

This thread was perfect timing as I created a war cleric of Asmodeus for season 9 AL to go with the Avernus adventure. Felt thematically appropriate for a war cleric to be in one the largest ongoing battles in the multiverse.

Compared to say a Light cleric - those will feel like significant improvements.

Generally I have come to the conclusion it's better to be a primary caster as a cleric than the muck around being a meh melee combatant.

There's a couple of exceptions based on subclasses and/ higher ability scores rolled or via magic items.

If I'm going to melee I like keying everything off wisdom.
The war cleric is good early on as HAM is great. But by level 8 I think I like a higher wisdom over strength.

Any melee cleric is also going to want spiritual guardians so 20 wisdom nature cleric level 8 with warcaster using shillagh is my go to.

With rolled stats an 18 I might use an arcane cleric beat down instead.

Multiple high rolled scores yeah look at war cleric. I also like magic damage as well and a cleric is probably going to be low down on the list for a magic items.

Sword and boards a lot more reliable than a magic great weapon in the printed adventures.

A belt of giant strength is roughly equivalent to 3 or 4 ASIs.

I tend to disagree. Clerics best spells tend to work in close proximity to enemies. They have good AC. Their AoO's actually hit hard enough to be a deterrent.

It's much easier to build a caster cleric - but I don't find them to be better - especially if you are of the school of though of killing enemies faster is one of the best defenses.
