Hasbro and Wizards made a huge investment to bring in new players with this movie.
What I've been hearing is they didn't care about the OGL fiasco, DND Beyond subscription cancellations, dips in quality of recent products, etc, because they were planning on this film bringing in enough fans to recoup what they lost. Not caring about old fans because millions of new fans were going to be coming to D&D because of this movie.
That's what I heard. Don't know how much was serious or just grumbling from the Internet.

Think that was more internet rumblings. You see it here a lot "they're not aiming it at you its for bew players" .

He'll you saw this sentiment with 4E.

The flaw is these theoretically new punters don't turn up.

I think the D&D movie needed to clear more than 40 million or so opening weekend.

Checking Box Office Mojo with a $40M domestic estimate, I'd say that's surprisingly a dud.

Earlier projections were 50 million iirc and even that number was marginal for its price tag.

Take away early release numbers and it's a sub 40 million opening.
Deadline and others were clear. The studio targeted 36. They'll beat that.

The earliest projections I've been able to find are here, from March 3rd, which say $23M-$30M. Perhaps you are misremembering the total domestic projection, which had a low end of $52M?

These projections were revised on March 24th to $27M-$36M, based on advanced ticket sales and positive reviews (both critic and audience). It's $38.5M opening weekend shouldn't be seen as anything other than slightly exceeding the most optimistic projections.

That really makes no sense. It's a safe bet that most people who went to early screenings would have seen the movie opening weekend. That's why box office sites roll those numbers into the opening weekend.

No idea I just remember 50 odd million being thrown around probably in February. May be early March . I have no idea how accurate or not it is. Mostly I font care and wouldn't pay to much attention until a week or do before movie lands.

That was just scuttlebutt. I'm not disputing the current figures or claiming the movies a flop or hit yet probably week two as it wasn't definitive one way or another.

We'll really need to see the legs the movie has in the coming weeks to really determine if it's a flop or not. Typically $150 million movies have at least $100 million in marketing budgets, probably bringing this up to around $250 million spent.

Theaters take around 50% domestically for most movies and foreign is even more due to having to work with local distributors (from what I understand China is the market where studios make the least money, only around 25% of the gross. Of course the size of the market make it worth it).
The conventional wisdom seems to be a movie needs to make 2.25-2.5 back in theaters to break even. I have doubts this movie will make it to over $500 but we'll see how the holds are.

Of course there are other ways to make money (streaming video, dvd, TV rights, etc) though Typically investors don't want a big budget film to slowly drag itself to profitability they want a hit. I believe Hasbro also partially funded this so if the DND merchandise and game get a big boost they may be willing to fund a sequel.

So was it a success or?

To early to call wasn't definitive either way (big flop, big hit).

Assuming you mean will it make money vs enjoying the movie. And no one knows the number need to break even 300 million minimum could be as high as 400-500 depending on marketing budget.
