The MM monsters are supposed to be the bulk of what you use. Making them all dead simple makes combat dead simple and, to me, quite boring mechanically.
But they are not all dead simple - that is a miss characterization, IMO.

Also, I thought you were a fan of 2014?

Or we reject it in favor of actually playing our own games. Who's with me?
Me except for the fact I like options.

I have had mostly the same group over the decades but we had dry spells or kids or grad school or new spouses…point being sometimes the gang was not the gang and I craved playing D&D!

Sadly, finding an AL game was often not close enough or more often was just full. I would have loved to drop in and play but never got to.

Never would beat playing with my pals which I am doing again…but I don’t see any downside for the ‘option’ to do organized play.

And other than cons I probably won’t now…

Playing in the basement with some cold brews is still superior but why wish away fast food places just because your spouse is a good cook? Sometimes it’s fun to cheat on your wife!

In a culinary sense ;). 🍔 cheeseburgers are good too

Turns out they just gave up on trying to convince people that yes, they really are allowed to customize the example backgrounds, and instead decided to make an example background for every possible combination.

(Yes, I know that would actually be a lot more than 144)

If they think that a subclass choice at level 1 in a class is too much for new players, they aren't going to throw a list of 144 backgrounds at newbies. I am sure the 144 touted in the article is simply 16 backgrounds multiplied by 9 species. Someone looking for a marketing hook decided that promoting the 144 number was a good idea, that more muddies the waters than clarifies things, especially when backgrounds are just a template for people who don't want to individually pick additional skills, proficiencies and a feat or needs help like the newbies that they are built for.

I dismiss it because no DM needs AL rules to run a public game for anyone who wants to join. I don't see why  anyone uses it, not just me. In fact, I don't see how anyone other than the corporation gathering your personal info benefits from it.
Theoretically it allows players to take the same character to any game with any DM, and allows DMs a huge pool of players and without requiring consistent attendance from any given player. Basically, it’s meant to facilitate open-table play.

In practice, my experience has been that you mostly play with the same group of people every week anyway, so there’s really not much point. But that’s the idea.

It really varies. I've had dozens of different DMs in AL* and DMed for dozens, likely hundreds of different players over the years. It's a great way to see how other DMs do things and to hone DMing skills.

I still prefer home games, even if some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had were AL games during large scale play interactives. There's something about a convention hall room of people working towards the same goal that you just don't get elsewhere.
