Planescape Planescape IS D&D Says Jeremy Crawford

Front & center In 2024 core rulebooks.

Planescape is Jeremy Crawford's favourite D&D setting. "It is D&D", he says, as he talks about how in the 2024 core rulebook updates Planescape will be more up front and center as "the setting of settings".

For a default D&D setting to be even close to exciting for me, WotC needs to choose things that isn't included.
That would be a nice change of pace for 5e.
5E Dragonlance did implicitly exclude halflings, tieflings, and dragonborn, FWIW. Though they also provided guidance for including "individual members - or even small enclaves" of those species in Krynn, and never explicitly said they weren't part of the setting (just, again, implied).

From WotC POV, this seems like a logical choice. It's easier to justify all the different species they are selling on D&D Beyond if your home base is Planescape.
well that's essentially the purpose of Greyhawk and FR; its just that PS is more nuanced about it and has concepts that make it unique, like belief shaping reality. I just remain hopeful they don't naughty word this up.

Hold on, let me check on that for you. Checks the recent reception for Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Mortal Kombat 1. Yeah, you can go ahead and tell them that if you want, but I somehow don't think they're going to believe you.
Just my opinion mate. Across the Spiderverse wasn’t nearly as good as the first one, and Mortal Kombat 1 isn’t nearly as good as the one released just prior. Multiverses are played out, because they are hard to pull off and most are creatively bankrupt. But if you think that WoTC and it’s Corporate sanitized Shareholder approved DnD can pull off a multiverse as good as Everything Everywhere All At Once, well, I don’t know how to help you. I read what Crawford said and it comes across as boring and derivative. But again, just my opinion, and if you feel the need to correct the wrong think of a stranger on the internet who wrote his comment in less than 20 seconds on the phone, that’s on you.

Did someone say that?
I think the guy I was responding to implied that while he was busy correcting me for having a wrong opinion, but I could be misinterpreting his scolding. I’m bowing out of the conversation. The new Planescape looks increasingly not so good, which is a real bummer because I had such high hopes for it.

Indeed, I do feel that need. That's how I was raised, though I admit it may be a Jewish thing. Someone offers an opinion and the listeners test their argument. If they can defend it successfully, then it carries weight. If it fails the test, it is discarded as flawed. And if you have no defense for your opinion, then it's just hot air and you shouldn't speak so carelessly next time. "That's just my opinion, why are you being so mean" is not a persuasive defense.

I see no such thing as the right to speak your opinions unopposed. If you speak, then its the listener's duty to put it to the test and your duty to prove your point. That isn't rudeness or incivility, it's the fundamentals of discussion.

Edit: And they went and deleted their posts. Or blocked me. Ah well.

Hang on a tick.

Sigil rhymes with wiggle?!?! Seriously?

In any case, well, my wallet thanks this announcement. I have zero interest in Planescape and never have. Maybe they'll finally make it appealing to me but I doubt it. I'm glad that folks that love Planescape are getting the love. I hope it's what you want.

Me? Yeah, I'll pass.

When VRGtR was announced, I was excited because I thought it'd continue the timeline of the 2E/3.X setting (I know some people think licensing the setting to White Wolf for 3.X means that WotC can't use any of that material now, but I see nothing to substantiate that idea). Then it came out that it was a reboot, one going back to that same "weekend in Hell" idea that so many Ravenloft fans, myself included, had long advocated for the setting to move away from, and it just destroyed my interest in the book.

Well, this is one for the people complaining about how WotC doesn't respect the old TSR-era lore, I suppose?

It's a personal gripe, but WotC really seems to be developing a habit of jumping the entire wrong way for my taste when re-doing legacy settings. Leaning hard into the 'weekend in hell' model of Ravenloft rather than the 'living Core' one, and now resurrecting the profoundly irritating TSR habit of shoving their multiverse into everything up to and including Dark Sun where it had no business being.

One-size-fits-all cosmology stank in the TSR era, and it stinks now. Dark Sun's cosmology (for example) should be designed in the service of telling a Dark Sun story with Dark Sun themes, which is different to Eberron or Dragonlance or Faerun stories and themes.
It’s a horrific thing they’ve done. Just listen to how pained Keith Baker sounds when people talk about how Eberron is linked to other settings. It messes with the fire conceits and themes of the settings but that sorta stuff doesn’t seem to matter I guess.
