The most dystopian thing about the 21st century is how much people are openly rooting for the villains generally -- not speaking in specifics here, since the issue is so widespread -- even when it's going to hurt them, because they've been sold some weird tribalism by cynical marketing folks.
They all seem to believe that if they just support the villain then, some day, they'll be merrily chortling in their own volcanic lair.

I stumbled upon Mandaeism, the last surviving Gnostic faith. It’s really interesting and is what I ended up basing most of the religion on (but I also mixed in aspects of Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and a few other faiths).
what I always say is, a religion like that would be prettier with Yazidism in it, particularly the outlying belief that Satan repented but isn’t perfectly pure, and the other six angels keep him on the straight and narrow when he lapses.

Yep. Ironically rooting for the villain is still rooting for the villain.

They’re the ones that call Satan the “Peacock Angel,” right? A religion like that probably does exist in the setting, but the one I was making definitely does think that Satan/Asmodeus/Ahriman and the Demiurge are evil.

This has absolutely nothing to do with any thread, but I started developing a new religion for a campaign I’m playing in (each player gets to add pieces to the worldbuilding when making their character). In the process of researching names for angels, I stumbled upon Mandaeism, the last surviving Gnostic faith. It’s really interesting and is what I ended up basing most of the religion on (but I also mixed in aspects of Jainism, Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, and a few other faiths).
It’s a lot of fun to go down the research rabbit hole during world-building. Even if I don’t use all the things I find as inspiration for my world, it’s still cool to learn about them.

I remember trying to figure out what I wanted my Moon God to be in my world. I had decided early on I wanted him to be a bat of some sort as I think bats are really cool and it fits the night theme pretty easily. That led me to researching and reading about the various Mayan gods and spirits after discovering the Bat Spirit Camazotz, who is often associated with the night as well as feath and sacrifice. It’s where I got the first half of the god’s name Camalune, from.

Grant it the finished creation pulled from far more places such as the Pokémon Lunala, Norse mythology’s Hati, lycanthropes (werewolves and werebats especially) in general, and myths about the winter season. But Camazotz was where I really started the path to creating my Lord of Moonlit Winters and it has a really cool name so I wanted to incorporate it somehow.

I’ve heard of Camazotz before. Mesoamerican mythology (what little of it we know about it) was pretty scary/cool. I haven’t used it as the primary inspiration for any of my worlds’ pantheons, but eventually I want to.
