It’s a lot of fun to go down the research rabbit hole during world-building. Even if I don’t use all the things I find as inspiration for my world, it’s still cool to learn about them.
I remember trying to figure out what I wanted my Moon God to be in my world. I had decided early on I wanted him to be a bat of some sort as I think bats are really cool and it fits the night theme pretty easily. That led me to researching and reading about the various Mayan gods and spirits after discovering the Bat Spirit Camazotz, who is often associated with the night as well as feath and sacrifice. It’s where I got the first half of the god’s name Camalune, from.
Grant it the finished creation pulled from far more places such as the Pokémon Lunala, Norse mythology’s Hati, lycanthropes (werewolves and werebats especially) in general, and myths about the winter season. But Camazotz was where I really started the path to creating my Lord of Moonlit Winters and it has a really cool name so I wanted to incorporate it somehow.
