D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Just because the Aberrant Mind with Spell Points can mimic the Psion BASE class doesn't mean it can in anyway replace a Psion full Class. Having subclasses or other customization options unique to a Psion character are important for the fantasy. We don't tell the Druids to gtfo because the Cleric with wildshape can just be a Druid, as Druid subclasses are unique and expand the story of the class by a lot.

I think you have to get to level 3, or something like that last I looked, but yes its close-ish, if you squint with one eye.
It helps to start with a race/origin with a psionic bent, too. There are a couple of options:
  • Githyanki/Githzerai (from MMotM) give you some limited psionics (the Mage Hand cantrip), resistance to psychic damage, and a malleable weapon proficiency.
  • Thri-Kreen (from Spelljammer) has a limited telepathy ability, a classic for psionics.
  • Custom Lineage (from Tasha's) will let you build a custom race with the following stats/traits:
    • Type/Size/Speed: Humanoid, Medium, 30ft.
    • Ability Score Increase: +2 Charisma
    • Feat: choose Telekinetic or Telepathic (both from Tasha's)
    • Variable Trait: Arcana proficiency
    • Languages: Common and one language of your choice
Personally? I'd go with Custom Lineage, and choose the Telepathic feat.

Why wouldnt it be?
I see it as a force in the world, most of us do not have some in born ability to manipulate gravity.
And honestly? The sorcerer's Aberrant Mind subclass with the Spell Points system in the DMG will get you 90% of the way there.
aside from cha clearly being the wrong stat having a terrible chassis and being stuck competing directly with the wizard which is insane, also only the most basic options of psionics and always the inborn magic which just sucks as it adds nothing.

druids should be a subclass just not a cleric one.

I meant no offense. If you need more than sorc + SP, you aren't alone. Allow me to recommend this excellent product from our own @Steampunkette:

But waiting for Wizards of the Coast to publish an official, fully-fledged Psionics core class? That's a long wait for a train that'll never come, I'm afraid.

This is straightforwardly untrue.

That's a pretty weasel-y approach, frankly. The majority don't have classes, and in the majority of games, many characters can heal, including ones who can cast very dangerous spells. There's certainly no clear line like you suggest.

Nope.

XI and XIV - no dash. XII doesn't have the separation you claim in the actual classes. I can only assume you didn't play XIII and are making an assumption - it doesn't have those classes at all - it's also not a game that actually involves healing magic most of the time.

Also what about XV and XVI? Why did you exclude them? You mention 16 games but then you don't actually list all the games which don't fit the pattern.
read the wiki, it seems to have been an older game thing

Always on magical effects and rapidly recharging magic seem both to me like qualities an innately magical being should have. Meanwhile finely manipulating spells seems more like something a person who studied magic theory could do.

I don't mind the separation
  • born/plagued with gifts => play a sorcerer
  • mind for academics & studied long and hard =>play a wizard

One thing I do hate about the sorcerer is that they stole the metamagic concept that OBVIOUSLY should be available for wizards as well.
The REAL problem is Wizards and Sorcerers should BOTH have metamagics.

Just Different ones.

Like Twinned Spell. A sorcerer letting the magic flow out their arm to their hands then parting their fingers at the last moment to affect two people. Sorcerer.

Changing Fluma to Fruma and making Fireball into Iceball then makin a hole where the cold doesn't hit the fighter? Wizard.
