Are you part of the "Lost Generation" of RPG gamers?

I started in 1994 (aged 10 at the time) with the Classic D&D boxed set, then quickly moved on to 2E. I played 2E from 94 to 2000 and was an early adopter of 3E (implementing changes from Dragon magazine even before the release). I have a soft spot in my memory for a lot of the books that came...

    D&D Settings but not D&D

There is a Planescape-inspired supplement for Dungeon World in development, called the Planarch Codex. [Dungeon World: Planarch Codex] A Mini-Supplement - Story Games : Tabletop Roleplaying 2.0 It looks pretty awesome. That said, I do still love some of the classic D&D settings, Planescape...

    Gamist, Narrativist, and Simulationist

I totally get the desire for gamist combat. Personally I'm not a fan, but I get that some people are. That said, narrativist combat doesn't usually take 2 hours :) Or, more properly, combat in "Story Now" games tends to go pretty fast compared to 3.x and 4E.

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Wait, you played in my Keep on the Borderlands campaign?? ;)

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

Which makes it sound like a social contract issue. Of course, traditionally, in D&D, they don't get to dictate that. The DM has absolute authority as to what gets thrown at the PCs. But this has often led to unhappy players and not-fun times at the game table, and not just because players are...

    I don't DM 4th edition, but when I do

While I agree with the old-school attitude expressed by the OP, I think this thread brings up larger issues that have to do with the social contract of the gaming group and what the players (including the DM) want and expect from the game. A couple of years ago, after our group realized that 4E...

Legends and Lore - The Genius of D&D

I do play classless RPGs (currently running The Shadow of Yesterday) so I totally get it. The problem is, they can't do that in D&D because then it wouldn't feel like D&D anymore. Class is a sacred cow.

Legends and Lore - The Genius of D&D

Ask a D&D player, no matter what his favored edition, about his character, and the first thing out of his mouth will probably be "I'm an elven ranger," "I'm a dwarven cleric," "I'm a halfling rogue." In a classless game, the most important thing is your Concept. That's true in D&D as well, but...

    Let's Forget the Forgotten Realms

I agree with Morrus, FWIW, but I believe the die has already been cast. After all, they've already hired some Chinese video game art studio for FR! I am really curious to see what that will look like... :/ I ran one campaign in the Realms, like others here, when the 3.0 Realms book came out. It...

If you could play in a campaign of your choice, what would it be?

Polaris. An extended In a Wicked Age campaign where we develop histories, maps, family trees, etc. through play. That backstabbing, player-driven Italian Renaissance campaign we keep talking about but for which we can't decide what system to use. Spelljammer (AD&D), with my old gaming...

The Problem with 21st century D&D (and a solution! Sort of)

I haven't been on this forum in ages, but thought I'd toss my hat in the ring. I've played Basic, 1E, 2E, 3E, 3.5, 4E, C&C, and a number of other RPGs over the years. What I have found in recent years is that complicated rulesets get in the way of what are, to me, the most important aspects of...

    Retro-gaming

PS, Treebore, it was fun listening in on your C&C game that one time, despite the PCs offing each other and getting hurt feelings. Whoever was DMing that night had some good narrative-description skills, even if they might have handled the player vs. player conflict differently. Eavesdropping...

    Retro-gaming

Well, I'm 24 and just finishing up my first Basic D&D (red box, 1983) campaign. Yes, that means red box came out a year before I was born. And yes, I'm the DM. All the players in the campaign are 32 years old or under, as well. Only one of them actually started with red box---as for me, I...

    Flgs in San Diego

Yup. I used to go to both stores when I lived there, FWIW. Although Game Empire used to be located in a different part of town. Do they still have RPGA events there? Those Warlords LC games were some of the most banal (and corrupt) excuses for roleplaying I've ever witnessed--but hey, I came...

Which version of D&D or D&D-like will you be playing by the end of 2008 ?

Well, I'm currently running Keep on the Shadowfell--despite disliking what I've seen of 4E, I felt compelled to give it a fair shot in play. Our first session went alright, but not great. The emphasis on tactical miniatures-based combat is a little bit much for me--sort of the opposite...
