I don't know - initially I agreed with this, but there is a decent amount of Classic in 3e. Unified ability mods (as opposed to a different table for everything), for example, are straight from Classic.

FWIW, the 1st Basic Set literally referred you to the upcoming AD&D manuals if you wanted to know more - it was explicitly an "entry drug" to AD&D. It was only with the Moldvay Basic Set that Classic D&D started to establish its own identity.

Honestly, I think you're pretty much done. You might want to include the OD&D Supplements after the "3 brown books" box as a seperate link between OD&D and AD&D (the way some folks see it, Holmes went one way, and 3BB + Supplements went another, leading to AD&D). Maybe UA in the orange-spine...

I'm going to be running Classic D&D, same as I already was, but you can be Gary'll be in my thoughts the entire time. I think the best tribute to Gary is simply to play on and have a laugh with friends.

The beauty of Classic is that you don't really need 8 million classes. Just have him create a fighter and let him play it with a code of honor and buy a horse - bingo, a cavalier! ;)

Nor do their stated intentions erase the fact that the designers were ordered to erase the backwards compatibility that was planned for AD&D 3rd edition when WotC bought the ranch. You're correct: my preferences don't alter reality, nor are they even relevant here; this is simply fact.
