    Would you participate in this?

Hi Ari- I discounted the character in the free story too much and for that I apologize. I'll also admit my feedback could have been more kindly put. Thank you for your considered response. It honestly was motivated by nothing more than a desire to respond to your question knowing how...

    Would you participate in this?

It's the fact that I need to purchase the book before participating in the contest that strikes me as overly-self promotional. There are other ways it could be structured as some have suggested on the thread, that do not require this. If others are fine with the contest as structured, go for it.

The person on the paper. (Most memorable characters.)

Doc Cabbage: "Yep, tried 'em all." THat was the first thing we asked him :p

So answering the poster's question in any way other than the desired answer is self-important? While it might sting a little, maybe it is also useful in the long run to hear from those who wouldn't participate so that he can alter the proposal and improve participation, no? I presume Ari's goal...

Guess I just don't expect that type of promotion in an enworld post. I feel bombarded enough by advertisements. You asked if folks would participate. I gave both an answer and a reason. I'm sorry if you didn't like either but I don't regret it. I regret thundering silence more. Maybe I speak...

I'm not trying to be mean. I can appreciate how hard it is to establish oneself as a writer. I've dabbled in artwork before and know what it is like to try to get noticed or not (BTW on that score, the cover to "Thief" looks an aweful lot like a piece I posted to renderosity some years ago ;)...

    Tracking Damage

Most of the time, the battle is static enough that I can number them on a pad of paper and keep track of it. If I need to, I may put a die down with a unique number of on it that cross references to my paper. In general, though, I draw critters from a range of figures and if I need to can use...

    Would you participate in this?

I wouldn't enter; I haven't read your books and it would seem like a cheesy way to rope in more readers so on general principles, it wouldn't get me to read the books either. But if I was a reader, I might find it interesting. Might be better in a different, fan based forum though, than a...

The person on the paper. (Most memorable characters.)

I like to plan out a character and work up backstory myself. But as a game group, some of the most memorable characters (not my own) are the broadly drawn, over the top types. The first character that comes to mind when you posed your question was a friend's character in a small...

    "He's beyond my healing ability..."

I never do that (single exception below) because I hate it. It feels like a clumsy plot device. The rules are the rules. If a PC could be healed in such circumstances, than the NPC should be heal-able. If I want to convey information and drama, I will find another way that does not crowbar the...

What if 5e is a board game?

Interesting thought although a big NO for me. If they do 5e, I want them to take the good from 4e and early systems. I like the direction but think the implementation leaves something to be desired (full disclosure: I ref a 4e game and like it well enough). Part of my"NO" is that there are...

    partial wild-shaping?

Or just work with the ref (assuming you are the player). Very few refs will object if the effect is entirely cosmetic and many won't mind if it is a bit more than that. I wouldn't; I've always found it underpowered and so wouldn't be averse to goose it a little if the player was really into the...

    Gaming Phases

Good stuff. That’s funny; for me college was my best gaming. It was the right mix of frequency and engaged players. But I was usually there ref. Mostly D&D, some Traveler. WOW was my distraction from tabletop RPGs and for a time a really enjoyed it. Plusses: game as much as you want (and I...

    Gaming Phases

Good call on attrition and level advancement; those too tend to track with my "eras" of play. For me attrition was partly tied to "realism" in the sense that at times I've felt PC death was proper for a well played fantasy world. These days, my interest in PC death is much more simple: while I...

    Gaming Phases

Yeah, it is funny how excessive time can lead to covering the littlest things. I had forgotten about detailed weather rules with hysteresis. On a similar note, I once had a list of something like 1000 gem descriptions that I used in the game. I've always loved geology and gems, wrote a perl...
