As someone who is running a 13th Age game where the bonuses are over 10, I can tell you that I do not find this to be the case.
But you keep playing these games in your head without playing them.
1. Some great old adventures.
2. A great meta-story for the world. Get the Almanacs and there is always something going on in the world that your PCs can hear about.
3. The world really feels like D&D.
There are two small problems with this argument.
First, we have Gygax' denial of the influence of LOTR on D&D. I suspect that we can all just put that aside.
Dwarves as PCs predate Basic D&D. However, the text of the early D&D does support the idea above of the proposed role of dwarves.
I disagree that using these stats will take the game away too far from D&D.
One could almost argue that changing the order from SIWDCCh changed the game from being D&D!
