Healing during a short rest with leader healing

This came up on our last game and the general rule has been that of course you can use your powers and class abilities outside of combat (when applicable). On the healing word I ruled that as long as there is no time constraint there is not reason the short rest can not be 10-20 mins instead...

Teleportation / Fey Step in three dimensions

This post is very helpful. Thank you! I think most of my "you can't do that" reaction to the teleporting mid air stuff is that it just isn't anything you ever had to worry about a 1st level character doing in 3.X. Immediatly this seemed both an overpowered skill and contrary to the intent of...

Teleportation / Fey Step in three dimensions

No there is nothing in the rules about line of sight having anything to do with the floor. However, if you look at all of the illestrations of "how to determine line of sight" they are certianly not 3 dimensional and none of them use anything *but* the four corners of the floor of the square...

Teleportation / Fey Step in three dimensions

We are having some conflict with how to handle the teleport powers like fey step within combat and general play. Can you fey step into empty space? If you are at the bottom of a 10 foot hole where a 5 foot sqare is open on top can you fey step out even though you are unable to see any of the 2...

Smart DM, Stupid Monsters (possible KotS spoilers)

For me this is a mix. Yes unintelligent monster will use some tactics. After all there is a certian instinct driven animal behavior that all hostile/predators should have. On the other hand they are more likly to get excited/angry/scared and do something that poses tactical disadvantage...

How to build a Puppeteer Villain

You are awsome and wonderful people. Great ideas thus far. The role playing aspects are of course essentials. Additionaly I had intended to have a high degree of "escape plan" and "environment control" for any encounter that involves him. The player characters are going to start feeling his...

How to build a Puppeteer Villain

I would love some suggestions on race/class/abilities for a (aprox) 15th level villain called "The Puppeteer" This will be a Pirate who is a reoccurring villain; the mastermind behind multiple plot lines. He is dark, drips with charisma, controls others both by manipulation and magic, and can...

    Stat generation option

Yes I should have pointed that out. 1 for 1 point buy. Part of the goal is to have fairly "heroic" character stats without being totaly unbalanced. It is much less generous than the stat system we have used for the last 6 years and I like that. ( I don't even want to go into what we were...

    Stat generation option

What do you think about this base stat roll option: Assuming a roll 4 d6 and drop the lowest system... Characters can either 1. Have 74 points to assign as they wish. or 2. Roll a set of 7 stats dropping the lowest of the 7. The total bonus of these stats must add up to be between +4 and...

Nonproficient in Cloth Armor = Naked?

Hummmm now I am pondering allowing my players to switch thier cloth armor proficiency for an additional weapon proficiency. Unbalanced? Yes. Hillarious? Absolutly! I did let one character who wanted to play an illiterate but street wise rogue an additional spoken language. Same thing right?

    Minions and Temp HP

I am in the "minions can get temp HP and benifit" camp. Since temp HPs are really a buffer that *prevents* a certian amount of HP damage I would say that the minion does not take damage until the temp HP buffer is used. After that it takes damage and *poof*. Dead minion.

So why are miniature's required... and uh.. character sheets are not?

That line made me giggle. I vote for the cost influence. I just imagine some people sitting around a table thinking about what they want to encourage the new guy to get. The argument that miniatures are indespensible but they meant to say "prefabricated" character sheets are not necessary...

    Opportunity Attack Rules Clarification

Fortunatly I won't have to "explain the realistic aspect" to this player as he is very intelligent and I am sure he can see that part himself. The real issue is just that he doesn't agree with me and he probably has some justifiable reason even though I don't believe he is correct. I really...

    Opportunity Attack Rules Clarification

I will be sure to do that. I am very curious to see his point too because he is probably my most "rules solid" player. This fact is part of why I was doubting my interpretation of the rules even though I felt it was clearly stated. Thanks to everyone for the responses!

    Opportunity Attack Rules Clarification

I have pointed out the "shift" and that they seem to have worked to move away from the concept of free 5 foot steps all together. I am not quite sure the crux of his argument yet but he did mention that it relies on reading about a dying character finishing his movement in the next square. It...
