D&D 5E Once More, Into The LTH Breach

Thank you Lanefan. Since I kept the ritual tag, I put in a small material component cost, so that there would be SOME consideration of resource expenditure. Also, my thoughts were still a bit that instead of being an automatic thing Tiny Hut might be held in reserve for when a bad rainstorm...

D&D 5E Once More, Into The LTH Breach

So, Quickleaf has spurred a thought in me that maybe this should just be a wooden hut, as a lot of cheese then just goes away. Bards and wizards, more comfort-seekers perhaps than most other classes, are thus quite appropriate for this spell. If so, would the below be on track? Tiny Hut...

D&D 5E Once More, Into The LTH Breach

I won't rehash all of the many drawbacks cited about the spell, but just to name a few: Ritual casting reduces it to zero resource expenditure, especially as there is no material component cost; occupants are virtually invulnerable, can't be seen (yet can see out), can fire missiles out, etc...

D&D 5E Once More, Into The LTH Breach

I've read all the threads here on Leomund's Tiny Hut, plus all the ones I could find in internet-land. I share the frequent displeasure with 5E's rendition (and "clarifications") of LTH, and I'm not crazy about Level Up's fix of it. However, I also don't think any version has really been both...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

Direct damage should not be unviable, but we also need to remember that it cuts both ways—when PCs are on the receiving end. Murder mysteries are the stuff of classic group problem solving, and what newbies (both players and DMs) bring as one of the expectations. Divinations nixing its...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

Except in an entertainment-saturated society, one complicated by time-starved individuals whose schedules to meet at one place at a certain time for a certain period of time, and consistently, are problematic as all get out, unexplained and unresolved incongruities in the game can just as easily...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

If I implied that I wanted to scrap the magic system, I apologize for sowing confusion. Unlike some folks, I do NOT want to abandon the Vancian system, especially with its Neo-Vancian improvement. I might just be having veteran’s sentiment, but I prefer it to the rapid recharge method, although...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

Remathilis: Even though we aren’t exactly agreeing, I have been enjoying these discussions! While I don’t know that I’m necessarily trying to “win,” I bring up authors in the same way the Federalist Papers are brought up for Constitutional questions—to highlight influences on the founders—but...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

I hate it when I’m pressed for time, because something invariably slips or trips, but here goes: Pem: NPC wizards are indeed dangerous without the DM keen-moderation you mention. Relatively new DMs won’t have this awareness level, and, given the rapid rise through the levels of characters in...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

Remathilis: I’m not sure I would say I took offense. I merely pointed out pitfalls and potential pitfalls (not all major; some were only minor or moderate). Of 53 spells out of 130 or so (about 40%). And pointing out that the king is a bit less finely clothed than might appear does not mean...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

I welcome the replies. I do hope we can avoid the vitriolic or ridiculing environment so much of our society, especially the virtual society, has lapsed into. Concerning my post from last night, I was hoping that the rest of what I posted would be addressed, for I thought those points in need...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

See my original comments on the spell. In retrospect, I should have called them something else, as the classic 3E S-o-D situations have been altered in 5E. I was merely pointing out that even though there is an improvement by the likely need of an intervening step (some damage inflicted on the...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

Finger of Death is the other, but even Hold Person could be considered that in the right circumstances. I probably should have called them Save/No Save and Die spells. Because the Power Words can be that, as I said, and are even more ideal because the target gets no save. I readily...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

The OP responds Yes, it’s me, the “OP.” People have brought up points that should be addressed by me. Here goes: Save or die spells are fine for those who are plenty okay with losing a lovingly detailed and carefully developed character like that. But if they’re not, then there’s a problem...

D&D 5E In Depth Critique of Part 3 of Basic Rules

I not only look in depth at many spells, but discuss Concentration, slots, rituals, Overchanneling, etc. Can you point out the grammatical errors? Might have happened in reposting, but thought I caught most of the ones in the file. I said it was long. And explained that's why it didn't...
