D&D 5E How strict are you with vision and illumination rules?

I wouldn't normally worry about it, but my players keep asking about it, so we play with it. They also keep track of their rations and when they need to forage even though I never bring it up. I swear, they all must do bookkeeping for fun in the rest of their spare time.

6-8 Encounters a long rest is, actually, a pretty problematic idea.

As I DM I make it my responsibility to vary the encounters so that the characters can make use of other abilities. Due to time constraints, the party generally has fewer but more difficult encounters. My group will take an early rest and say, "well this day is shot" if that happens. I think...

D&D 5E What have you found to be the hardest thing for new players to understand about 5e systems?

Hands down, alignment. Eventually, I just removed it from the game entirely.

Archdevil Moloch (Mordenkainen's tome of foes preview from Dragon+)

Depends on the style of the game the DM is running. They can be, but they don't have to be. I'm working on an urban campaign where combat is best avoided.

Not unless playing Tieflings are causing players to become Satanists.

Archdevil Moloch (Mordenkainen's tome of foes preview from Dragon+)

I intended the post as a response to the original idea of the HP being too low, and not necessarily to your particular post. Your quote was just handy. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Yowza!

Then give him more HP. Not sure what the problem is.

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

I've never had this problem. I think of the story as a cloth and each character a thread. Parts of the story are built around each character. If a character drops out, things get missed, but the other players wouldn't notice. They still have their own threads. My last campaign was very...

Elves, Humans, and The Little Rascals

And dwarves by 5. Who am I kidding, dwarves don't shave.

    Surprise for my group

What tool did you use to create that map? I have CC, but this is much better than my mediocre efforts. I printed my map out on six pages of card stock and used Avery laminate sheets to make a single, foldable map. I thought that was cool as hell until I saw this :)

Archdevil Moloch (Mordenkainen's tome of foes preview from Dragon+)

The 1E art reminds me of the time when I was about 12 and my Mother's friend expressed disbelief that I was allowed to play such a dangerous game. It always amused me that certain types saw devil stat blocks as a lure to devil worship, but to me and my friends it was a call to righteously kick...

    Power is Relative

It varies by player. My wife cares most about getting the most out of spell use (I find this amusing as she's a rogue), others in my group have spreadsheets to calculate maximum physical power (i.e. damage). Of course as a DM, I control what they encounter whether it's a physical or mental. I...

DM advice: How do you NOT kill your party?

Note that fudging is just a tool. It shouldn't be done on every single roll (or more than a few percent of rolls). Fudging doesn't even have to be done on a roll. In my last campaign, an assassin succefully snuck in the PC's camp and, based on the critical hit rules of our table, killed the...

D&D 5E Mordenkainens starting to show up in the wild?

If memory serves (and it rarely does, these days) back in 1E I believe the word "flighty" was used to describe elves. I'm not sure what happened between 2E and 5E, though.
