I'm assuming (and as a result making an @$$ of you and umption) that everyone has probably peeked at the map from Hoofchew by now, so you'll know the general layout of the room.
The real question is... is your DM so lazy that he would engineer a combat encounter that doesn't require him to...
As for how magic interacts with tech... have you read any of the "Dresden Files" books by Jim Butcher? He has a lot of interesting ideas as to how magic would interact in a modern setting (for example, most technology produced after the 1940's doesn't work right around an arcanist... cell...

Perhaps instead of a 10-person game, you find someone else to run a similar game... and you each guarantee the other a slot to play.
If there's two 6-person games, with 5 free slots... then that's still room for 10 players, and it'll be two faster moving games.

Sorry for all the delays. It has been a rough week in RL. We would've still been flowing smoothly, except that since we've completed the first skill challenge... we're at a 'big reveal' point, but I haven't had the time to type it out.
I'm going to do it in stages for now, so that we can get...
If I keep the Dwarf race, then mostly I'd eliminate the spirit ancestors (shaman tie-ins). I might try out a warforged, but that'll be a much different backstory...
