D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

Meh? Really? Something this basic and fundamental and, by your characterization, at best they've only become aware of it within the past day after months (at least) of design and playtesting? At worst, they were aware of it, but (perhaps) hoped no one would notice. If they have thought...

D&D 4E Showing the Math: Proving that 4e’s Skill Challenge system is broken (math heavy)

I decided to post this back around page 13, then it became moot around page 16 or so. But heck, after all the time spent reading, I'll post my original thought anyway... ___________________________________________________ ENWorld isn't exactly a D&D backwater. I find it hard to believe that...

D&D 4E Obligatory dump stats in 4e: the irrelevance of Intelligence

Perhaps the choice of labels for abilities is just a bit unfortunate. If Intelligence were instead labeled "Lore" (or somesuch) and Wisdom were perhaps instead labeled Intuition/Instinct/Insight/etc., would this still offend some as much?

D&D 4E Obligatory dump stats in 4e: the irrelevance of Intelligence

But is it a weakness if there is no negative consequence (absent a self-imposed one for role-playing reasons) attached to it? I haven't reads word one of the new rules, but I'll be very disappointed if things are as represented in this thread. Ah well, tweaking's half the fun anyway...

    Stone Age D&D Games?

There was an old Dragon article (maybe in the 60's or 70's issue wise) that had a good write-up on ice age/stone age campaigning.

D&D 4E How could 4E be more elegant?

If this were done, then I don't think there would really be a need for both INT and WIS. Perhaps collapse these two abilities into one called LORE, and then add a sixth ability called PERCEPTION...

    [OT] today's random language gripe

Interestingly, I do both in my own "idiolect". ;) Spiced Cider Ice Coffee Ice(d) Tea?? (Who knows, as I mentioned, I can't tell from my pronunciation) It would be fun to structure a test to find out if I apply an underlying rule, or if each is learned on an individual basis. My suspicion is...

    [OT] today's random language gripe

Well. . .it is, and it isn't ;) . . . While spelled with a "d", depending on its environment it is either pronounced as a "d" or a "t". In the case of "iced", the preceding "s" sound causes it to be realized as "t" (devoiced). An additional twist occurs wrt "iced tea", as the first sound of...

    [OT] today's random language gripe

William Safire often strikes me as being akin to the 19th century grammarians who told us we simply must not split our infinitives. Why? Well, it began with a faulty premise. . . That language had devolved from some perfect state. For them, of course, this perfect state was Latin. Now, in...

    [OT] today's random language gripe

Hey, finally, a discussion where my (to this point) worthless degree in linguistics might prove useful! Nevertheless, I will refrain  It has been my experience that discussions--much less debates-- concerning a person's native language tend to become a bit, shall we say, heated. ;)...

    3E Mortality Rate

Whoa!!! :) Sweet & Simple Wish I'd thought of it. I just might use something similar in my next Basic D&D campaign. I don't think I'd allow the purchase of additional dice though--just a straight 1 per level. Do you have them refresh between adventures, recover at some other rate, or are...

    Name the weapon!

I could see it as a very highly stylized halberd *if* it also incorporated some type of thrusting point. Absent that, I'm with you--I really can't see using halberd stats (unless you simlpy remove the set versus charge option).

    Name the weapon!

I agree, that would be a good approximation as well--and it might even fit the character concept a bit better (some sort of tribal shaman?). I suppose it depends more upon whether you view it as being used primarily for slashing or piercing.

    Name the weapon!

Well, it's a fantasy weapon that: 1) Looks to be primarily for slashing; 2) Can hook foes with the backward curve; 3) Is a polearm, and; 4) Has no point whereby it can be set versus a charge. I think it fits the description of the Guisarme pretty much to a "T". :) You know, EGG would...
