A GMing telling the players about the gameworld is not like real life

I'll stop you at your premise: This is a nice opinion, and could just as easily turn out to be "how you hope it is". It is conjecture and hypothesis: it cannot be proven. Your experience of the "real world" would be completely identical if your experience were being shaped intentionally by...

    Duration/Existence of Spell-like/Supernatural Abilities in 5e?

Also a lot of creatures have “multi attack” that allows them to do action x AND action y, when neither are actually “attacks”. Multi attack also sometimes allow bonus actions.

Gaining skills at higher levels issue

Another possible explanation is that +6 at 16th level is roughly comparable to a +2 at 1st level, and therefore learning the skill later provides the same comparable benefit

Thought experiment: human and variant stats as expressions of culture

Answers: 1) maybe, but it sounds more like conformity vs individuality. I’ll add more on this later... 2) I lean towards RP first, so the choice would depend on the description of the cultures, but with no other information, I’d lean towards the variant human. 3) yes, though I may be biased...

    Illusions, lighting, and reflectance

Exactly. We are discussing a cantrip and a 1st level spell. They are limited by context and design to delay or distract. I don’t read it that way - they are two separate mechanisms: 1) physical interaction (“I touch it.”), and; 2) spending an action observing it (“I look at it really closely”).

    Illusions, lighting, and reflectance

Dissect the sentence again: it is not the instance of something passing through the image that reveals the illusion. It is the physical interaction. Implied by the context, is that said interaction has to be observed in order for it to be relevant, as in: If person A turns away from the image...

    Illusions, lighting, and reflectance

It doesn’t, though. The save is only required if one cannot interact with the image. “Physical interaction reveals the illusion, because things can pass through it.”

    Illusions, lighting, and reflectance

From Minor Illusion: “Physical interaction with the image reveals it to be an illusion, because things can pass through it.” it also says you can create “an image of an object.” It literally states that light (both philosophically and scientifically a “thing”) passes through it. For those...

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

FrogReaver said: 1) “My reason was that a level 1 spell slot is a resource...” —-this is undeniable; 2) “...anything which requires a resource should be better than something that does not.” —-on its own, most people, myself included, would agree with this design philosophy. The problem is...

Thank you Mouseferatu - I was just going to add that.

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

I, too, disagree with the premise regarding resources (see ranged weapons: ammunition) - and actually, for the same reason: all spells cost resources to cast, namely, actions. Unless you can make the point that scaling damage cantrips make 1st lvl spell slots meaningless, which you can’t. You...

Skills used by players on other players.

Question: would you allow a pc to walk into the throne room and persuade the king to abdicate and turn the crown over to the pc? I’m guessing not. Why not? Because we all know that there are limits to what skills can do, and that is clearly one of them. So, you, as the DM rule that there is...

    Having Trouble As A DM

I usually let my players tell me who the BBEG will be - meaning that I don’t start with a specific BBEG or even a specific endpoint in mind. I throw out ideas and encounters with groups and organizations that inhabit the world and pay attention to which ones the players/characters react most...

D&D 5E Healing, range and action economy

If you are more concerned with healing, you cast Cure Wounds; if you are more concerned with doing something else, you cast Healing Word. Reversing the ranges completely negates the point of Healing Word. If you have to move to cast it, you probably have nothing worthwhile to do with your...
