You're thinking of base classes.

If the poll included all base classes from every supplement..... well shouldn't it include all the setting-related classes as well?

...the classes would have been so many that the poll would have been pointless.

"Core" for D&D 3.5 is the PHB, DMG, and MM- so this list is complete as far as that goes. There are several BASE classes (which includes the CORE eleven here) but I don't know of an SRD that lists those. So I'm curious too, what SRD are you looking at?

i respectfully disagree. srd is the updated core. while core may have been originally the three books listed, once the srd came out, that is core.

we can leave it as my opinion if that does not seem to fit for you.

edit: that's srd as in downloaded from wotc's site.

Ok, then- given that definition of core*, do you mean one of the psionic classes is your fave? Or do you mean a NPC class?

* Since the books themselves are no longer published, the SRD could be considered the only "core" rules that are left. However, I think most people picture only the basic 3 books when a DM says a game will be "core rules only". And I think you'd definitely have a debate on your hands if you assumed that such a game would include psionics. ;) Now I'm thinking a poll on "what is core?" would be interesting.

Even in the WotC SRD, the psionics are kept seperate from the core classes, as well as NPC classes. So this is the "Vote for your favorite core of the core class!" thread?
When you play with a new player, you link them the SRD and tell them to make a character using that? That's an interesting way to overwhelm someone... ^^'

"Hey guys! There is this epic fantasy game i wanna introduce you to! D&D? You might have heard it?
...Anyway in this game you can be a Commoner! Isn't that great or what?"

But isn't it all about the roleplaying? I mean, what could be better for roleplaying than a commoner? Because everything is a challenge, the opportunities will be so much greater, and when you do succeed at something instead of being handed victory on a silver platter, your rewards will taste all the more sweeter!

A real roleplayer would choose Commoner over any other class.

Touché...

i would love to try something like this... problem is that is if the rest of the players "doesn't play along" you will not really enjoy it... A party full of commoners might work though...

On a different note, can you come up with a truly powerful/almost-broken commoner-based build?

Ok.. let's not make it so hard... say... 5 levels?

Sure.

Take the flaw Chicken Infested from Dragon Magazine and max Handle Animal. Pull out a horde of chickens and have them peck your foes to death. Or just fill the world up with chickens and suffocate everyone. Or create a black hole once the amount of chickens reaches a critical density.

This is why optimizers regard the Commoner as the most powerful class ever.

Not to mention, Commoners do have craft as a class skill. So if they optimize craft: basketweaving as well- then it's just game over!

^^ well taken points. and yes, i do link new players to the srd. people appreciate being able to learn and/or play a game without having to fork over cash to do so.

i also give them a list of "read in this order" to walk them through the srd. and my contact info for questions. not to mention the sit-down talks in addition to all of that.

i actually am rather fond of the expert class, but my favorite would have to be from the psionics list.

I found another identical poll dating back to 2009.

Check out the differences.

1-rogue up front, ...cleric....wizard (!)
2-Monk does better than the Ranger! (!)

Seems like 2011 is the year of the Wizard!
