I didn't notice them in the list because of the "multicolor box" and "black box" tags while in my memory I remember the red rather than the black (it's literally more black than red, but the red sticks out better).
This is the one I meant by multicolour:

Neat poll! Unfortunately I literally can't answer it though, because I honestly don't know what version was used to introduce me to the game! It was circa 1987-ish, so either 1e, some version of Basic, or OD&D. If I had to guess, I would say probably a boxed set, but I have almost zero way of ever finding out for sure.

I can say this much: I remember a picture from the rule book showing a thief with a dagger mugging some dude, in black and white. I also remember asking one of my fellow players about playing a Thief, and he said something about thieves Strength scores being limited to 16 or less (so of course I shouldn't play one, lol). He may have been misinformed, so I don't even know about the validity of that.

That sounds like the 1st edition Player's Handbook, but the strength max was for races (16 was female elf).

Good to know! I'll have to dig my 1e books out of the box and check sometime. I have a feeling that it was a boxed set, but I don't have a copy of those, so I can't check...

Was it this picture? 'Cause this is definitely AD&D 1e PHB.

Yes indeed, that was it. I haven't seen that image in close to 25 years, but I recognize it without a doubt, it made that much impression on me (I don't know why).

Did that image appear in any other version of the printed rules up to 1987?

(I tried to XP you for producing that, but have done so too recently, apparently).

Unsure if the books my DM had were from a whitebox or OCE, but I voted OCE, as that was what I bought not long after.
