What @dragoner said. Just go to the thrift store and buy an old wooden bowl if you don't already have one. If you're feeling fancy, glue some felt or fabric in the bottom. Or draw, paint, or woodburn a cool image in the bottom, if you've got the skill, and cover it with resin.

I've seen dice trays made from empty picture frames and cigar boxes, too. A little felt, some spray-on glue, and you've got a pretty nice looking tray.

A dice tray and/.or a dice cup.

If you can find a cheap backgammon set, even one missing the disks, you're likely to get a tray and a dice cup or two. If you want to use it as two separate ones, one can replace the hinge with magnets, or modify the hinge pin to be easily removable.

I made a dice tray a week ago - I went to the local art shop., found a table display tray ($7), a sheet of foam to quiet it ($1.50), and a can of spray glue ($2.00). The can of glue has a lot of uses left, after making two.

If you're super cheap, hit the dollar-store or poundland, buy a $1 or £1 picture frame, and line it with dead T-shirt...

The progressive give (foam or cloth) reduces rolling noise, and causes dice to tumble a bit more. Even rounded edge dice bounce more on my foam-lined one. (My daughter wanted the other one I made.)
