D&D General My Problem(s) With Halflings, and How To Create Engaging/Interesting Fantasy Races

I allow them or the Midgard Dragonkin. Same concept.

The two I've seen switch to Dragonkin. They get +2 Cha, +1 whatever based on subtype, a resistance based on subtype and a cantrip.

Least popular races I've seen are those two, half Orcs and halflings. Probably Dwarves as well.

Humans, Elves, Half Elves are popular, Tieflings in the other groups. Mordenkainen and/or Tashas Tieflings are decent and the get the edgelord appeal. They're the new Drow.
Midgard is a setting that actually does something with them.

In fact, now I'm curious if Midgard does something interesting with halfings - since I'd consider Midgard as basically the gold standard in D&D settings of recent time.

I've never disallowed them, I've just never had anyone want to play one, or even wish they here mechanically better.

Yeah they're not a common choice my games or surrounding games.

I've seen more Aasimar than probably Gnomes, Half Orcs and Halflings put togather and could throw Dragonborn on that pile as well. One example each I think maybe one DB that played 2 sessions.

Think I'm the only one I know of who played a halfling. I liked it mechanically.

Dragonborn are one of those things certain people love a lot and I personally don't quite get. And it definitely has a lot to do with the dragon connection; I've never heard anyone being enthused about the lizard folk.

What is "done with" a race is a matter for the campaign setting. It's irrelevant for a player book.

I like lizardfolk. If a setting had them as a core race possibly interested depending on the mechanics/write up.

Midgard halflings kinda kewl and the art is a lot better.

Art one almost got one player to roll one up.

One of the subraces is up in not Scandinavia.
Certainly the 5e halfling art is horrible. We ignore it and go with a 2nd edition/LotR movie look (and aren't the only ones - look at the halfling models in Solasta and BG3!)

The appearance/art for a race I think matters far more than people realise.

Look at this glory. Winterfolk halfling Midgard.

+1 con, recovers all exhaustion levels on a long rest, can use wisdom instead if intelligence on history/religion normal halfling traits.
