Setting up an RPG in North Jersey

Hello all, I am looking to gauge the interest in a 4e DnD or possibly a Warhammer Fantasy RPG group in north Jersey. either at my house in Hackettstown or run out of Dark Tower (those of us in the rea know where it is). This would be a weekly or every other week game. The 4e setting is not...

    Forked Thread: Improved Encounter Builder

Thirded. It would be invaluable if this were an option. I imagine the fact it is free precludes that currently, but if they wrapped up a printable version into the DDI, then I too would be sold. --Breezly

4e and kids - Forked: With a subscription to DDi Character Builder, buying a PHB2

I have a 12, 11 and 8yr old and they have varying degrees of interest in DnD so it is not so much age dependent as maturity dependent. I tried to get the 12yr old involved because she showed an interest, but she was too shy amongst the group to interact, so I think it is a matter of time. The...

    Power (healing surge) items

Why? If you get resist 10 until the end of your next turn you could prevent a whole heck of a lot of damage that would cost more than a few healing surges to get you back. I have seen the resist used to great effect for types that like to get into the thick of things. --Breezly

Item Creation Rituals - several points

My whole issue with previous editions was that it took so dang long to enchant anything. If you wanted to kick up your favorite sword, you had to invest a great deal of downtime to make it happen, which we never really had. I have not toyed with the new rules yet, but I am hoping it allows for...

D&D General What (in)famous D&D adventure sites exist in your homebrew?

I will put my hat in for Saltmarsh as well. I am building a campaign around it and the U-Series adventures to get things rolling. I am thinking of throwing in a few of the older locations, like the Ghost Tower of Inverness, though I may have to move it from its traditional spot.

    Two Dozen Nasty DM Tricks

Most of them I find just mean and I wouldn't use against players because I don't think the message would be received well if I did them. It would become too much of a me vs them and that is not the goal of my game. a few of them I can see being used to break up the standard notion of how...

    Two Dozen Nasty DM Tricks

I have heard, or read I think, of a similar situation, but the zombie is infected with yellow mold, so every time you hit it, well...you get the idea. Down right evil... --Breezly

    Any interest in Gamma World?

How about the green onion, or scallion as it is sometimes referred to? That way I can work in a tall, hair spine look? :) --Breezly ps...Is fourth edition the one with the Green Orb on the cover that they worked in with d20 modern? I have that one and I have third edition. I am just not...

Saltmarsh and the U-Series to 4e

Thanx, I will take a look. I have been toying with Ned a bit and I am thinking of making him still a bad guy, but a shifter sort that will work against them in various ways until they finally meet in some climactic battle. I don't plan on using him as a direct opponent initially, but there may...

    Any interest in Gamma World?

Hello all. I don't know how I missed this earlier, but I am a huge Gamma World fan. If a spot opens up I would love to try and sneak into the game. I am going to lurk to see how things go. --Breezly

    Places/Terrain ideas

Yes, this would work well. The 1e encounters were relatively smaller in scale, combining them into larger 4e encounters works well. For example in U1, the lower dungeon has smugglers scattered in a few rooms. You can easily combine this into a larger, more difficult final encounter in stead...

    Getting Ready To GM Again

Two things come to mind, that I seem to always forget. 1) Read the monsters and know what they can do. I always forget a shift here, and a slide there. Having that information at hand makes the game move more quickly. 2) Line/Area of effect seems to come up a lot and what constitutes cover...

How Do You Narrate/Present Skill Challenges

Ah, I see this group may include me. What I should clarify is that I do make them roll the dice as part of the skill challenge, I just don't explicitly say, Make a nature check, make an endurance check. I try to weave the dice rolling into a narrative of some sort, as Rel mentions above. I...

    Places/Terrain ideas

100% agree with these two statements. I have been going through updating the Sinister Secrets of Saltmarsh and I started by first trying to represent all of the 1e encounters as 4e encounters. The nice thing about 4e is it is relatively easy to stick with the idea of the 1e encounter and...

Saltmarsh and the U-Series to 4e

This group is a bunch of grizzled veterans, likely to turn my plot devices to tattered shreds. Seems like I will have to be much more clever if I am going to pull this off well, particularly if they have been through it before. Thanx for the advice, it gives me some things to think about in...

Saltmarsh and the U-Series to 4e

Hello, I am updating the Saltmarsh towm from the DMG II and the U-Series of modules to 4e for an intro game (potential campaign) this weekend. I am starting with the Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh, but changing the underlying plot from smugglers to a cult of Vecna. Quick Editorial: I would...

How Much Will You Carry to a Game?

For me, it was the same as when we first had kids. I would bring diapers, more food than was needed, toys, pack-and-play, barf-bags, what have you in the beginning. After a while, I would stuff a diaper in my pocket and call it good. For gaming, I would bring every book that I used for...
