Prose, Terminology, Fluff, & Presentation: Spreadsheets or Haiku?

I'm not loving the 4E description of Sleep. I've always pictured the wizard doing his little bit of hocus pocus, and everyone in the target area suddenly falls asleep. "You exert your will" makes it sound like something involving active mental exertion, like some form of psychic attack. I never...

Prose, Terminology, Fluff, & Presentation: Spreadsheets or Haiku?

They need to make two versions of the D&D rules, the Shakespeare version for people who want evocative purple prose, and the Cliff Notes version for Fallstorm. :)

D&D 4E WotC, DDI, 4E, and Hasbro: Some History

Actually, wasn't that Jim Shooter's blog, rather than Starlin? I remember reading something like that not too long ago. Jim Shooter: Items of Interest – And Gary Gygax

Fortress America: When Gaming and Politics Collide

I hate the original version of the FFG blurb text because, as GreyLord pointed out, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. You've got an America that's developed some terrifying new weapon capable of wiping out whole nations, but when the world decides to team up and neutralize America, for...

    Wyan of Bodach info

While Rajaat wanted to return the world to the halflings, from what I remember he wasn't a halfling himself, but a hideously deformed pyreen. Can't remember where I read that... the 2E revised campaign setting boxed set?

    Dark Sun Collector's Guide

Personally, I feel that both Ravenloft products deserve mention on the list because the write-up on Kalidnay and its Sorcerer King is substantial enough that it may be useful for someone interested in Dark Sun lore (even if the gender of Kalid-Ma and his/her high priest is inconsistent). The 2E...

    LFG booted from DragonCon

Yeah, but he actually got vaccinated for H1N1, so how is he really an anti-vaccine wacko? If he was, he'd have refused to vaccine for both himself and his child. Quote: "While the arc this week pokes fun at the Swine Flu Vaccine and the hysteria surrounding it, in the interest of full...

Convincing a 4e group to try Pathfinder

My suggestion is to tell everyone you'd like to try out this new game system, and ask if anyone else would be interested in meeting up and giving it a go on a different day of the week from whenever you folks normally run your 4E sessions. Since you know the rules and they don't, you should...

    Dark Sun: The Differences

Ah, thanks for clarifying. I remember when we first started out I thought the erdlu were the big birds they rode around in the novels, so I bought one, only to be told by the DM that erdlu were actually some kind of herd animal and I wouldn't be allowed to use one as a mount. That really ticked...

    Dark Sun: The Differences

Dark Sun was the only D&D setting I know of that used chocobos as mounts (except they were called crodlu, and I don't think they officially made it into the rules until the revised boxed set). Half-giants would randomly roll part of their alignment (I believe they got to choose either the...

    It's Dark Sun

If memory serves correctly, Rajaat used humans to carry out the Cleansing Wars because halflings couldn't become trained as wizards (this being 2E, where many non-human races had class limitations). Rajaat was born as a hideously malformed pyreen. I believe it was stated (or at least implied)...

    It's Dark Sun

No paladins, but they did have clerics that worshipped one of the four main elements. They also had druids. I wonder if the setting will still use weapon breakage rules and psionics. I like the low metal feel of the original setting, but weapon breakage was a real nuisance for everyone.

    Upcoming Boardgames

Age of Conan sounds like it might be fun, based on the demo review someone put up on BGG. I like how Conan is like a force unto himself, wandering around, doing his own little quests, and periodically getting involved as the players duke it out for board supremacy (or at least that's what it...

    Upcoming Boardgames

I haven't bought a new board game since Lord of the Rings (though I did just order Starcraft on a whim on Friday, so if it looks good I might be interested in Brood War). Right now the game I'm interested in is: Legend of the Five Rings: Art of War Legend of the Five Rings » Board Game I used...

    PHB errors and reprint schedule

I'm waiting for another 3 or so years, when they fix all the errors and call it 4.5E. I kid, of course. Probably.

    Preorder, cancel, preorder, cancel etc

Not gonna preorder, irrespective of how good/bad 4E might be. Mainly because 1st printings of the PHB in prior editions of D&D have contained silly errors, and I'm not into penciling or pasting in corrections.

New FR compared with Dragonlance 5th age

Well, the Time of Troubles was a bit more extensive than that. It also killed off three evil gods and replaced them with one lame one (Cyric), threw a bunch of wild magic and dead magic zones around the place, and (most annoyingly) killed off every assassin on the planet (to explain the removal...

    DDXP: When Anti's become Pro's

You must mean Woody Guthrie. The only thing Arlo is remembered for is "Alice's Restaurant". I agree with your main point, though. 4E seems to have succeeded in terms of making combat more interesting, but there are several things which I don't agree with, to the point where I'm starting to...

    My take.

Well, we typically ran 1E/2E games with both indoor and outdoor random encounter tables. I always felt this was fair... you could decide to camp in a location and try to heal up as long as you wanted, but there's a risk that something might come along and potentially hurt you worse (most of the...

    Healing

I had the same feeling as well. Healing surges I'm sort of cool with, but the idea that no matter how badly beat up you are, a 6 hour sleep will fix up all your wounds seems rather hard to rationalize. I know they're trying to make the parties less cleric-dependent and all, but this seems a bit...
