D&D 5E the shield warrior - better than some think?

While I acknowledge that 5E can be played without magic items, I think the bare minimum is a magic weapon somewhere around Tier 2 to deal with all those enemies resistant to nonmagical weapons. And that usually comes in the form of a +1. It can also be a little self-fulfilling. The mere...

    D&D General Feat Observant

It might be Crawfords most contested ruling. Personally (as the DM), I use Passive Perception when nothing really exciting is happening and active perception when there is something important going on. Just wandering around the city not expecting anything immediately? Travelling down a road on...

    D&D 5E Reworking Protection

I saw a table that tossed out Protection, and simply gave Spirit Shield instead. "If another creature you can see within 10 feet of you takes damage, you can use your reaction to reduce that damage by 2d6. When you reach certain levels in this class, you can reduce the damage by more: by 3d6 at...

D&D General An Iconic D&D Villain Features In Stranger Things’ New Seasom

At least you're not Vecna Healthcare. "Staffing Shortages? Automate Patient Intake with Vecna." Digital Patient Intake Solutions INDEED. 💀

    D&D 5E Thoughts on a skills PC.

Yeah, Tasha Ranger is a nice 1 level dip for Expertise in a single skill, Favored Foe, Medium Armor, Shields, an extra skill trained. And then either Scout or Soulknife until you get Reliable Talent.

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

I do not believe you are supposed to limit it. That is to say, the expectation is full HP (but not full spell slots or necessarily full focus points) for each encounter.

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

Matt Colville is running a 4E game. It's a decent way to mine 4E for good ideas and steal them for yourself, if you are into watching D&D streams.

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

That's fair. I don't think D&D will ever get away from the 5MWD if it keeps the long rest mechanic. It might be able to scoot over to something like regaining your strong abilities after 4-5 encounters. I know there are a few 5E third party products that use a system like that to great success...

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

You're right. I guess I should have narrowed it down to the non-feat uses of Skills. I think the Skill feats are... sometimes very neat, and sometimes way too granular. Like, a separate skill feat for creeping slowly in snow, another for rubble, and a third for shrubbery. But that's PF2 in a...

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

If they are captured or enslaved, then that's an interesting plot. Let's see what happens! If they are dead, then crud. These things happen from time to time. If they end up dead a lot, it's time to have an OOC talk. There's clearly a mismatch in what everyone feels is fun.

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

I agree completely. PF2 is very similar to 4E, though I like the simple encounter refresh system more than the focus system of PF2. Like, I understand they tried to balance resource management with encounter powers when it comes to focus points, but the result is... wonky. On the flip side, PF2...

D&D General IS the 5 min work day a feature or a bug?

There's always the issue of players not caring. And by that, I mean players who accept that plot will continue to happen regardless of what happens, and they don't mind it when bad things happen. It's just more plot. The dungeon reinforces with more enemies? Okay, that's more plot to devour. The...

D&D 5E Buffing monks: with simple changes.

I still stand by my answer from one year ago. Divorce Stunning Strike from Ki. Make it usable 1+Proficiency per short rest. :P

D&D 5E (+) Share Your Custom Warlock Patrons Here!

Despite being a half-joke, I put real thought into it! It's the kind of thing that might fit into an Acquisitions Incorporated style game.

D&D 5E Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

100%, his ruling about See Invisibility is quite silly. I actually go the opposite direction. You can see them so clearly you might not even know they are invisible to other people unless something clues you off. I mean, if you're casting the spell you are obviously suspecting it, but I have had...

D&D 5E Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I honestly have tremendous respect for Crawford and what he's managed to accomplish, both mechanically and with representation. The amount of spreadsheet crunching he's done is pretty intense, and not something many game designers (who are also networked well enough to get assigned to bigger...

D&D 5E Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

I love how that description includes "book" which is composed of potentially several hundred objects. But yes, rulings over rules either way.

D&D 5E Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

A corpse is an object. An unconscious creature is a creature. So sayeth the 20% dubious Crawford.

D&D 5E Why is animate dead considered inherently evil?

Control Undead, a much higher level spell. A friendly Death Tyrant, possibly controlled by the spell above. Basically, there are options. But they are rarer and less likely to be commonplace even in a society where an abundance of Animate Dead casting people might exist. But a Tippyverse...
