D&D 5E Beast Master Exceptional Training (level 7)

With the new companions in Tasha's, the Beast Master can use a bonus action to command the beast to take an action, typically Attack, but Dash, Disengage, Dodge, or Hide are also possibilities. At 7th level, the ranger gets "Exceptional Training" which grants the ability to use a bonus action...

D&D 5E XP for Absent Players

This would be the worst possible option for me and my group. One player can't make it, so the campaign is on hold and we're gonna run something else? No thanks, (and I might even say that as a player in the game). That's the same as just cancelling the session to me, with the added...

Thanks to everyone for the thoughts and interesting discussion. Definitely lots of food for thought.

D&D 5E XP for Absent Players

That's actually why they get the half. They're still with the party in the adventure. If he dies, he dies. Only ever happened to a ranger's beast companion, so far, but always a very real threat.

D&D 5E XP for Absent Players

For more than 30 years I've been awarding half XP for players who miss the gaming session. What are considerations for changing this approach and awarding the same XP to everyone, absent or present? ETA: Playing 5E, don't care at all about characters all being the same level. Part of me...

D&D 5E [GUIDE] Dealing Death: Handbook of the True Assassin

First mistake, you only get Sneak Attack once per turn. That eliminates 42d6 from your Action Surged Nova Strike above. So 751 become 499. Second "mistake" is you're using max damage instead of average die rolls. All the other builds compute based on average die rolls, so in order to make a...

D&D 5E [GUIDE] Dealing Death: Handbook of the True Assassin

There are a lot of ideas here, including at least five posts that reference either Gloom Stalker or the UA Deepstalker (45, 56, 58, 61, 77).

Thanks, I did miss that. And that would be both funny and annoying!

D&D 5E [GUIDE] Dealing Death: Handbook of the True Assassin

Not seeing 80d6. I get 10d6 for the short sword and sneak attack, doubled due to surprise, then doubled again due to the Path to the Grave, but that "only" gets me to 40d6. Am I missing something else?

Is that from UA? I feel like that is from UA.

D&D 5E [GUIDE] Dealing Death: Handbook of the True Assassin

I've recently discovered something that might fit your build as well. You've got Ranger 3, so you're half-way there. Go to Ranger 4, grab the feat, then add Paladin 2. Ranger 4 and Paladin 2 combine to give you 6 spell slots with which to smite for a relatively small investment. Of course...

    Creating Factions: Large or Small?

Ok, like a "West Marches" game, but with fewer players and less driven by the players / more driven by the DM. Pretty similar, overall. Thanks!

D&D 5E [GUIDE] Dealing Death: Handbook of the True Assassin

Monk 11 + Assassin 3 + Ranger 3 = 17 levels, so not sure if I missed something that kept you at level 13. Two levels of Bard could eventually net you +3 more on initiative, FWIW, better than the Gloomstalker unless your wisdom is 16. (Not to discount the other assassin-gloomstalker synergies.)
