D&D 5E Hypervelocity bards (WAS Fixing the bard's action economy (quick suggestion))

This example also illustrates that is is absolutely possible to sing (or speak, for that matter) and play the flute at the same time.

"Dust" and "Midway" - Codenames for Upcoming D&D Hardcovers

I thought "stardust" too, but my theory was that it would be an update of Barrier Peaks. Assuming the codename has any kind of relevant meaning, which is not a given. (Er, SPOILERS, I guess.)

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

You're quite correct, and I, for lack of a more precise and satisfactory term, tacked on a label that vastly oversimplifies the positions. But "Cavaliers" and "Roundheads" was even more confusing, so. ;) Well, if pemerton's doing the same sort of thing elsewhere (to the point of being a jerk...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

A few general points, if I may. I think the lore-adherents in this convo have interesting and worthwhile things to say, even if I don't always agree or connect with their point of view. Their kink is not my kink, but their kink is okay. But I also think that picking at pemerton's old Greyhawk...

D&D 5E Perception, combat, and legendary actions

Thanks for the responses, everyone. I'm getting a much clearer picture of the kind of scenarios this seems to have been intended to cover.

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

Okay, fair enough as far as it goes. But in addition to the points brought up by @Lanefan and @pemerton about this definition, it's the fifth bullet that particularly muddies things for me with regards to lore. Because - and we're getting into serious Nomic territory here, as if we weren't...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

So a sort of inverse smerp, then?

D&D 5E Perception, combat, and legendary actions

A number of creatures that have legendary actions - particularly dragons - list Detect as one of the options available, described as the monster making a Wisdom (Perception) check. This has raised a number of questions for me about Perception and its role in combat. The Detect legendary action...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

Okay, so I've been thinking about some of the dialogue that was previously confusing me a little, because the last couple of rounds I was initially scratching my head that you'd put forth a response of "But changing that lore changes the experience of play," to which I could only reply, "Um ...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

The example that Bigsta shares is relevant to many points that have come up while this thread has gone round. "Elemental Evil isn't Dark Sun" is a visceral squick reaction from a player who has definite, but possibly hard to articulate, feelings about what DS canon is (and can be) and what it...

This, all of this. Yes, yes, thunderously yes.
  12. ProgBard

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

Sure (and that might be a fascinating AU take on the Realms), but there's no reason it has to be a wholesale replacement, either. There's a lot of narrative room between "all wizards are now defilers" and "this one wizard figured out defilement." I don't disagree, but, to channel Paarfi of...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

Agreed! But - - I think the disconnect here is that we're using the word "rules" here to mean different things. And that's okay! (I remain, after all, a descriptivist.) But some of the things you're talking about here fall outside that circle for me; I'm just not at ease with my usage of rules...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

I'm not convinced that either of those last two sentences are consistently true, alone or in combination. :) I think lore often comes first, and suggests rules interactions (if any are needed - but see my previous post) that might arise from it. And role-playing games, by their nature...
  15. ProgBard

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

You really think so? Because magic that draws on the life-force of nearby creatures seems like a trope with a much, much older pedigree than DS, and I'm not really having any trouble imagining it in other settings (probably not as a replacement for the default spellcasting system, but as a nasty...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

That is an interesting post, though it hasn't brought me around on the Angry GM - I find that his stuff usually has one toe over the line of BadWrongFun. And it's not clear to my satisfaction how he resolves the apparent contradiction he admits to, or what the actual difference is between the...

D&D 5E Whatever "lore" is, it isn't "rules."

I still hold that they're different dials (and insist that what I'm playing is very much D&D, thankyoukindly :)). That lore and rules influence each other is non-controversial. But consider that a Greyhawk wizard and a Realmsian wizard both use the default casting rules striaght out of the PHB...

D&D 5E NPCs: Where can I find more?

Second this one. It's a great book, and has both named NPCs built with class levels and a nice collection of generic statblocks as well.

D&D 5E NPCs: Where can I find more?

Much obliged, Shiroiken, for pitching my stuff so I don't have to be so gauche as to come in and do it myself. :)
