We had a gamemaster ban humans, the result everybody chose different races. Just let everyone know before characters are thought about what are the options and as long as everyone is reasonable it will work. D&D is very resilient.

I changed the hut to have 100 hp and have an AC equal to the spell save of the caster. Although I haven't seen this in action yet

The one I saw played like a fighter with a d6 hit die. They did o.k. until they gained the ire of the foe then they spent the rest of the battle making death saves. (or trying to make death saves) AoE's are their doom

I always try to put fumble charts into games, it works well if everyone doesn't take the game too serious and doesn't slow down the game too much (have the chart handy) The other thing I find is don't make everything just damage and falling have other effects on mine after you fumble and roll...

I have always let the players have both. Since I have never had a problem with them having some stuff and a few gold to start with. Although if the two options were 1. quick option to begin playing now get less or 2. more money more choices I would rethink my stance.

Short range is several meters so 20-30 feet and the only blasters with that range are hold-out blasters regular blasters are at least medium range.The range bands were meant to be abstract so you could theater of the mind or throw down a crude map and play.
