D&D 5E Finding someone by scent in a city

Thanks for all the replies! I've been away from ENWorld for almost 10 years, it's awesome to be back and get so many thoughtful and interesting comments! I ended up just letting it work, quickly narrating the 3-hour-hunt through the city streets to help set the tone for when they'd find their...

D&D 5E Finding someone by scent in a city

My group (a 1st level party) is searching for a missing person inside a city. They've got a couple of good hunting dogs and an item that belonged to the person that carries her scent. I'd love to hear how you'd run the search. Specifically: Is it even remotely plausible that dogs could track...

    D&D 5E War

My players just hit 9th level, and got news from one of the dwarven queens that she's going to attack the human capitol city in a few weeks. She's got dwarven, drow, and svirfneblin troops with her, and her goal is to overthrow the evil human wizard-kings who rule the land. There's also an...

Hillside Games vs. The Wyvern's Tale: An Update

They had their grand opening this past Saturday, to coincide with Free RPG Day. It was a huge success. Tons of people came through, boardgames were sold, and roughly a dozen games were played. They have a pretty great location near downtown, and 5 good-sized rooms for gamers to play in.

In the time it took them to write that email, they could have written instead, "We realize we made a mistake registering those domains, and are working to resolve the situation with The Wyvern's Tale." It doesn't take a day to apologize.

Hillside Games, Asheville: The Unfriendly Local Game Store

Heh, I suggested the same thing. But Kickstarter seems to be focused on raising money for creative endeavours, so this probably wouldn't fly. Also, in case I wasn't clear in my OP--I'm not affiliated with either store in any way. I care about the gaming scene in my town, and I know one of the...

I thought the same thing at first, before realizing you have to click Everyone to see other people's posts to their wall. https://www.facebook.com/HillsideGames?sk=wall&filter=1 Also, in case the screenshot is hard to read, here's the WHOIS record...

Hillside Games, Asheville: The Unfriendly Local Game Store

Hillside Games of Asheville, NC - the worst game store in America? Unethical practices, domain-name stealing, anti-competitive tactics, and frivolous lawsuit threats against those who criticize are just the start! This news item was originally a forum thread posted Nareau. I've promoted it to...

Darkness vs. Major Image (and others)

The good guys cast Darkness, knowing their darkvision will give them an advantage in ambushing their enemy. The room they were in was already dim, so now it's totally dark. Their enemy happens to be a spellcaster, and he casts Major Image. The illusion is that of a fire elemental. Does the...

I need some interesting dice recipes

My wife has started making geeky soaps (to sell on Etsy), some of which contain soap-dice. They're pretty awesome. I suggested she could make a series of soaps with dice rolls we might actually see at the table. Here's an example: "Critical hit with a keen flaming burst longsword!" 2d20...

What level should this spell be?

Oops! Sorry about that, not what I meant to say. Fixed now. The idea here is that you can see through the fog, but your enemies can't. They have to interact with it, then make a Will save in order to see through it.

    Adjudicating Illusion magic

I've got a rules-savvy player who's chosen to start playing a 5th level illusionist in my Pathfinder game. He recently asked me a few questions, and I thought I'd turn to the peanut gallery to help with the answers. How would you rule on these?

Aiding another and secondary effects like Trip

Does the bonus from the aid another action apply only to a single die roll, or can it apply to secondary effects as well? Let's say four wolves are attacking someone, and three successfully Aid Another for their alpha (who's rolling an actual attack). Does the alpha get a +6 (+2 each from 3...

I need a capital city (Kyoto)

On Sunday, my players are going to be venturing to Kyoto (circa 688 AD), and I need to get together a city for them to explore. I'm looking for something along the lines of the old Greyhawk folio, with info on locations, power groups, people, etc. Preferably in a PDF, so I can download it and...

    New DM

Actually, it works both in Hollywood movies and in my games. See, doing things like that is awesome. Having them fall to the floor isn't (except in the rare instances when it is). My #2 priority in games is that they be awesome.

Learn how to say "yes" to your players. If a player wants to swing across the room from the chandelier, and it's remotely plausible the room they're in has one, then let them give it a try. It's easy to fall into the habit of treating your players as opponents rather than friends, and that's...
